Alice was rescued as a kitten from inside a storm drain on a hillside during a rainstorm. Alice was about six weeks old at the time and was literally screaming for help! Alice is now six years old.
Dasher is a friendly, calm pack llama who loves other animals. Dasher was a great help in calming down the 10 newly rescued llamas last week. She came to the sanctuary when her owner no longer cared to spend the money required to feed her during winter.
Frieda is a doeling born to one of the does that arrived in the back of a truck in 0 degree weather. Frieda's mother was too stressed to care for her, so Frieda is being bottle fed by the Merciful Maiden. Formula for kids and lambs costs $25.00 per 8 pound bucket. Currently 2 buckets per week are needed for the bottle feeding babies.
The 14 llamas want to thank you for your generous outpouring of kindness. They are doing well and are happy together. Thank you!
Here are Babykins, Ramakins, Lucy Goosy, Nelson, and Nessie. Nelson and Nessie were dumped in a river right before winter. Because the Merciful Maiden was rescuing abandoned kttens by the river at a logging/lumber company, the geese saw her and voluntarily tried to get to her. Nelson got up the river embankment, but Nessie had one foot caught in the ice. Nelson wouldn't leave her. Eventually, with great effort and at great risk, the Merciful Maiden got Nessie free of the ice. Both Nelson and Nessie were quite a sight sitting on the back seat of the Maiden's truck as she drove them home with the rescued kittens on the front seat. What a day!
Does and Kids (Goats) - The moms are 3 of the 6 rescued goats that were driven to auction in an open truck in 0 degree weather to be sold for slaughter even though they were pregnant. They were so cold (hypothermic) that they didn't sell. The Merciful Maiden rescued them. They all delivered beautiful kids. The Moms and kids will now stay together.
Ivy loves to perch on Harriet, the ewe, and Harriet never minds. Of course, Harriet hopes that Buffy and Katy aren't going to try the same stunt! The kids are all born to the 6 does discussed in the previous photo. Harriet and her two lambs, Harvey and Harry, were rescued from being shipped to slaughter.
The rescued Muscovy duck, Hercule, loves to watch over the rescued bunnies. A petting zoo closed down, and the Merciful Maiden was only one step ahead of the bunnies becoming snake food!

A call came in last year regarding two pairs of peacocks in the forest. Their chicks had been killed and eaten by predators, but the adults were surviving by staying in the trees. It took many attempts to catch the peacocks, but they eventually were safe and sound in the Merciful Maiden's barn. Percival, Presley, Patsy, and Penny now loudly greet the Merciful Maiden each day. She has even learned how to answer back in peacock language!
TomTom's original owners got him free as a chick along with a gosling named Lucy. Though the original owners loved TomTom and Lucy and took wonderful care of them, they had to give them up when the size and noise of the birds caused problems in the mobile home park where they lived. Again, it was the Merciful Maiden to the rescue, and TomTom and Lucy are living happily at the sanctuary.
