The board layout at the start of the game - The Romans are on the right.
The view on the Roman left flank
...and the view on the Roman right flank
The Roman Velites surge forward to try and take the high ground in front of the Spanish army
And come under a hail of javelins from the Spanish Auxillia
Which forces one unit to withdraw
The Velites attack the hills again, and casualties are inflicted on both sides
Further fighting causes the Velites on the hill to run away (again!) and a unit of Hastati start to advance
The Spanish, buoyed by their victory, attack the other unit of Velites, and drive them back across the plain
However, the Velites attack again...
And despite causing casualties are once more forced to retreat.
Another part of the Spanish line advances
...but the Auxillia on the hill die under a hail of Javelins - forcing their accompanying General to flee. Romans 1 - Spanish - 0
Meanwhile on the Roamn right, a probe by a unit of cavalry is met in force
and the Roman cavalry take many casualties
However, as the Spanish cavalry savour their victory, they are themselves charged, and wiped out. Romans 2 - Spanish 0
Another unit of Spanish cavalry enter the fray, and the already hard hit Roman cavalry start to retire
from which the Spanish cavalry emerge victorious Romans 2 - Spanish 1
And the Roman cavalry General is ridden down whilst attempting to escape Romans 2 - Spanish 2
And the exultant Spanish cavalry then thunder into the remaining Roman horse and slaughter them Romans 2 - Spanish 3
Meanwhile, back on the Roman left, the Velites come under a hail of missile fire
...and are forced to retreat once more
The Spanish advance to take the just vacated hills
...pushing forward with many of their troops. The battle on the Roman left is about to get bloody...
The Roman Hatstati attack the Spanish, forcing one unit to retreat
And more of the Spanish troops run before the advancing Romans
A melee ensues
And the Roman Infantry once more feel the bite of Spanish javelins
The Romans advance, but the Spanish Auxilla once more melt away into the trees
Whilst the Spanish on the hill cause the Hastati to retreat
The Roman legions continue theor advance, forcing the Spanish back, but inflicting few casualties
And are once more forced to retreat after heavy fighting on the edge of the trees
Fresh Spanish troops enter the fray, and the weakened Romans retreat further
And once more, the sky is black with javelins, forcing the Romans back
Sensing a possible breakthrough, the Spanish advance into hand-to-hand combat
...but the Hastati, though badly mauled, destroy their foe Romans 3 - Spanish 3
More Spanish missile fire
And the Spanish on far right try and catch the forward Roman unit in a pincer, but are themselves crushed. Romans 4 - Spanish 3
if it were possible, the battle on the left intensifies. More Roman legions advance in an attempt to finish off the Spanish army
Heavy casualties are caused on both sides, but it looks like the Romans have finally forced an opening
But once more the fighting at the tree line means that the Romans cannot bring their greater discipline to bear, and the legions start to break and retreat with great loss of life
but the Hastati finally force their way into the trees Romans 5 - Spanish 3
And a foolish attempt to drive the Spanish back from the hills to end the day meets a dismal end Romans 5 - Spanish 4
Finally the Roman Triari move to the attack, and the Spanish flee before them
But even the Roman veterans can make no head-way as their Hastati compariats are slaughtered Romans 5 - Spanish 5
And in the final act of the day, the last few Roman Triari fall at the edge of the trees, with bodies of the fallen all around them. Romans 5 - Spanish 6 An incredibly hard fought battle. The Romans perhaps played into the Spanish hands, by engaging them in terrain in which the Spanish had the advantage, but the body count in the game was huge, with only a single unit a side still at full strength.
