Removed Plots: Lafayette Place, Greenwich CT

At one time a family cemetery was located off Lafayette Place in Greenwich near Greenwich Hospital and the Lewis Family Cemetery. The cemetery graves were transferred to Putnam Cemetery.

Cos Cob (Strickland Road)

This second-oldest cemetery is off Strickland Road in Cos Cob and is bordered by an iron fence. The field behind closest to the Mill Pond contains many unmarked graves. Many of the settlers who migrated across the Mianus River in 1672 may be buried here. At one time the cemetery included where Strickland Road passes today. When the road was extend these graves were removed and transferred to the area closer to the Mill Pond according to William E. Finch, Jr., late town historian. The earliest gravestone belongs to Benjamin Mead, died Feb. 22, 1746. His circa 16997 homestead still stands on Orchard Street. Nearby is the gravestone of Obadiah Mead, died 1759. Both gravestones feature examples of winged soul effigies carved at the top of each stone. The cemetery is maintained by the Greenwich Parks Department.

Cos Cob Family Plot (off Relay Place)

This family plot is located on the western side of the Cos Cob Mill Pond. Access is from the end of Relay Place, a dead-end road off East Putnam Avenue. Walk along the shore of the Mill Pond, keeping the stone house to your right.

Lot and Drake's Corner, Greenwich

The Mead Family Burying Ground at Lot and Drake's Corner is near the intersection of North Street and Taconic Road in Greenwich, Connecticut. It is on the right side of the road next to 2 Taconic Road. It is a small plot bordered by an iron gate and stone wall. Among those interred here are Jonah Mead, died February 21, 1827 aged 78 years, 2 months and 18 days, as well as Lot Mead, died June 20, 1866 aged 85 years, 7 months and 10 days.

Family Plot North Greenwich off Cliffdale Road

This small burying ground marks the final resting place for ancestors of one branch of the Mead's. It is bordered by bayberry bushes and gate. The cemetery is surround by private property on a hillside that many years ago was used as an apple orchard. This farmstead is located near the junction of Riversville Road and Cliffdale Road in North Greenwich. Burials have taken place at this site from circa 1776 to 1832. The original homestead built circa 1728 is nearby. A raid on the farm took place here during the American Revolutionary War. Obadiah Mead was killed in that raid, and his grave is believed to be in the cemetery, marked only by a fieldstone marker. See S.P. Mead's 'Ye Historie of Ye Town of Greenwich,' page 147.
