Berlin in a chilly spring week, May-June 2010
Berlin was surprising to us in its newness. After nearly every building in many parts was burned out or worse in 1945, and after the city was divided for 45 years, it seems like all the buildings have been restored or replaced and are new. Most of the buildings are 6-8 storyies high - very few skyscrapers - all uniform height but different architectures. They've left one church unrepaired as a permanent memorial of the damage. The damages were so long ago that they have an big display in the historic museum to inform people about Nazis and the war. It was busy with German vistitors.
The divided city had a museum in each half - now they've been unified with one permanent museum for each period and/or specialty. There's a museum for German history, another for Berlin history, a third for church history. All the churches seemed to be converted to museums or concert halls with occasional services. There were striking reminders of the Jews who were "beastially murdered."
