It was so foggy on the way to Manali, that the visibility dropped to about 5 m and we had to take a break.
Pankaj, watering the plants :)

We in Manali express...

beginning of our journey to Manali. We had hired an Innova and there were four of us - Pankaj, Lesh, John and I.
Beautiful, beautiful mountains :)
BRO (Border Road Organization) maintains Manali-Leh highway. Incidentally these guys have also built the highest roads of the world. and all these roads fall in Ladakhi region. Great, isn't it?
Another beautiful view. I think I forgot to mention, you can click on the zoom button to see the larger image..
Look at the road. This is not the worst, not even close.. :)
Rohtang is still 26 km..
mountains..
mountains again..
This is snow, well frozen snow.
2 dudz @ rohtang pass (el 3979 m) . undoubtedly the best pic of the trip.
Lesh, John, Manu and Pankaj at Rohtang Pass
Mountain sheep and water stream of course :)
or in english - 'bridge is weak, please go slow'. Almost all the bridges that met on the way had this board. Only one vehicle was allowed at a time..
This must be Satluj, not entirely sure though..
again, same river
Much of the road has been washed away by mountain stream. This is a pretty common thing on mountains..
Pankaj and Manu, near Keylong. See the water fall in the background? :)
We're near Keylong now.
that's Keylong town, down there
Mountains wrapped in clouds.. Beautiful.
Pankaj, smart dude..
We, going back to our hotel by a short-cut
Our mighty hotel, The Chandra Bhaga. We booked it online at HPTDC site.

We have come 165 km from Manali
beautiful mountains.
see those snow caped mountain peeks trying to hide in clouds..
clouds rising from snow
now comes the interesting part.. this is the bridge. it's being repaired.
we had to take break because of the bridge. and we made the most of this break. pankaj posing by the bridge.
and this is the river. name - bhaga nallah.
this is some information about bridge. I can't make anything out of it, except the name and probably loc means distance from Manali :)
as I said, we made most of our break. we got down to river shore. it was good there. lovely weather. it was still morning 10 am or so.
river
I am going down further.. to feel water.
happily sitting now :)
we again.
pankaj coming back after peeing..haha. hurling a stone on me.
bridge from down under
river again. see 2 iron wires on the right?
wires up close :)
Lesh coming back after doing some photography. She went in another direction.
See the point? This is tire of our car. And car is stuck.
River from the car window, after it was stuck. Yes, this happened to us. Somebody told our driver that the car can go through the river. Since bridge repair was taking time, he tried it. And see what happened :)
How did we take this photograph? So, we got little adventurous and when our driver said that we have to push the car, we came out jumping. I wanted to feel the water :)
Let me tell you this - water was freezing cold. You can't imagine how cold. So, in pushing the most difficult part was to stand in the water. After all our efforts, it moved only a bit.
We came little out to stand on stones to save our toes. And yes, Pankaj and I were laughing all the time. After all, this was the most adventurous and interesting part of our journey.
See the stones where we were standing.
See our feet. They were completely red. In fact, toes were starting to become yellow.
Water level was increasing with time.
See the stone in my jeans? Well, while pushing the car I happened to be behind one tire. And as the tire moved, all the water and stones showered on me.
Wondering how we came out? A tractor, that was being used for a construction nearby, towed us. That guy charged 400 from us. Well, I forgot to tell you about barlachala - high pass, el. 5045m.
Snow caped mountains, all bare.
Gang of four.
We again. all happy :) It was a good journey over all. Lesh is a nice girl - cool headed and enthusiastic
Snow beside the road.
Camps with green roofs.
Camps with white roofs :)
Wondering how plain the roads are? :)
this is near Sarchu.
Finally Sarchu, Sarchu is at the border of Himachal Pradesh and J&K. Now J&K starts.
Another of that typical bridge. One vehicle at a time.
Hmm, this road goes to Kargil and Srinagar as well. Kargil is in Ladakh region and pretty close to Leh.
That's where we ate in Sarchu. Menu: Dal-roti, omelet, paratha and of course chai.
Lesh and John also ate here (well, did they have any other option? :-)) Lesh had dal-roti and John had plain omelet. and of course all of us had tea.
Pankaj, finally happy after seeing food :-). Pankaj and I had aloo paratha and some dal roti.
This guy and one old lady ran this mini restaurant. Food was delicious actually. I think, we paid 230 here. 35/- per dal roti x 3, 10/- per paratha x 4, 15/- omelet x 2, 5/- per chai x 5 and 20/- for water bottle.
Indus river :)
Pankaj in style :)
another bridge. our driver talked about an accident taking place on this bridge because of 2 vehicles trying to cross it at the same time.
Leh is still far. 214 Km.
Nakeela, another pass (el. 4740m). These riders taking some rest.
The desert starts. See the trucks?
Another pass. Name - Lachulung La, Elevation - 5059m.
Snow on the desert mountains.
Sadly Pankaj is not feeling well, he is feeling AMS. Well, all of us felt that. All of us got headaches.
Pang, our next destination. 9 km from here. Leh is still 183 Km.
Rocky mountains, and a stream trying to find a place here.
See the road?
See the rock formations. Interesting, no?
Finally Pang. This place had some mini restaurants. And this was the last place within many hours to have any.
Mountains and shadows.
Now the mightiest of all. Tanglang La. El. 5359 m. Second highest pass of the world. Yes, the world. The highest pass is also in Ladakh region.
Now Pankaj. He wasn't feeling well here.
It was good to leave Tanglang La behind :)
