On the way home

On the way home, we had an overnight stay in Addis Ababa! We got up really early in the morning and had about 2 hours to explore before we went back to the airport. We walked around for the first half, haphazardly stumbling upon some really interesting things. Then we got a cab and went to the market to do some shopping!

On the Road & In Blantyre

As you may have noticed by now, our main form of transportation in Malawi was the minibus. These are some pictures we took from the minibus windows, along with some that we took from cars when people were kind enough to give us a lift! There are also a few of the city of Blantyre.

You can tell how much he loves each and every one of the children there just by the smile on his face! Against all reason, he has amazing hope for their futures and talks about Grace with pure passion! "It is only through the grace of God!" he told us. Under the "Latest News" section on the site, Rachel is one of the international teachers to who it refers. If you decide you might want to donate, we have also met the McCloskey family, and can assure you that any donation will be greatly appreciated and that every penny will be put to good use! As for the pictures at the bottom of the page, you can find pictures of Wahko, Ernest, and Giles in our album. As you'll see, Wahko is quite the hugger!

Sunset at Musuku Lodge & Zomba Plateau

Rachel's friend Sam came to visit us in Zomba for two days, and since she has access to a truck, she took us to see the sunset at a lodge and up to the Zomba Plateau. A lot of these pictures are essentially the same, but if you watch the clouds you'll be astonished at how beautiful they are! They just get better and better as time passes!

To Lilongwe for New Years

We didn't have any plans for New Year's Eve, so we took a minibus ride up to stay with Jennifer and Terri in Lilongwe. They had a couple of people over and we had food and wine on the chonde. We were so tired from all the minibus traveling we had been doind over the last 2 weeks that it was definitely a struggle to stay up past midnight!

Mount Mulanji

The day after Boxing Day, we grabbed a minibus to Mulanji. We had "reservations" at a forest lodge at the foot of Mount Mulanji and plans to hike up to the waterfalls. Getting to and from the lodge was a bit of an adventure, but it was a great little trip overall!

Christmas & Boxing Day

We spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in Blantyre, mainly at the Johnston's house. Christmas Eve church was during a horrible thunderstorm, but Christmas Day was beautiful. The day after Christmas is another holiday called Boxing Day. All of the missionaries in Malawi get together on that day. This year it was at the Limbe Sports Club which is near Blantyre. We had a great time swimming and eating an early dinner, and then everyone went back to the Johnston's for dessert.

Bush Church the Day before Christmas

We stayed at Rachel's house for one night and then got up early the next morning to go to Blantyre. We made it to Blantyre in a little over an hour on a minibus and Rob Wendland (on of the missionaries there) picked us up. He drove us about 2 1/2 hours out into the bush to go to one of the churches there! We were greeted by very excited children when we arrived and hung around outside for a little while. When we went inside and sat down, the choir (mostly children) organized themselves and began to sing - the most beautiful sound in the world!!! There are a few videos here that should work, but they can never fully convey how it felt to sit in the church that day! I know this is a lot of pictures, but there was no way I could choose just a few of them!

Dedza Pottery & Rachel's house in Zomba

The day after I got to Malawi, we took a minibus from Lilongwe to Zomba with a stop at the Dedza pottery lodge on the way. We had a great lunch and did some shopping...and a LOT of walking!

Liz in Ethiopia

As if the layover in London wasn't great enough, I had an even longer one in Ethiopia! I got in at about 8 in the morning and didn't leave until 9 the next day! I met someone on the plane who had the same layover, so we went out into the city together to see some museums and a church! It was absolutely amazing and I learned a lot!

Liz in London

On my way to Malawi I had a 15 hour layover in London. So, given the time it took me to get into and out of the airport, I had about 11 hours to explore the city! How much of London can you see in 11 hours? I think I did alright!
