Traffic

Traffic in Moscow can be horrendous, especially on weekday mornings from about 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and weekday evenings from about 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Monday mornings and Friday evenings are particularly bad and more so in summer months when thousands of Muscovites spend their weekends at their dachas (summer houses) outside of town. Be prepared to spend long hours in traffic jams, or use the very efficient metro. More information on public and private transportation can be found in Chapter 7 of the book.

Stalin Skyscrapers

Moscow has seven Stalin skyscrapers. Two of them are purely residential buildings (the ones on Kudrinskaya Ploshchad and Kotelnicheskaya Naberezhnaya). Two are part residential and part official (the one at metro Krasnye Vorota/Sadovaya Spasskaya and the former Ukraina Hotel). One is a hotel (formerly know as the Leningradskaya Hotel, today this building is home to the Moscow Hilton Leningradskaya). One is home to Moscow State University (MGU), and number seven is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Smolenskaya Ploshchad. They are famous for their architecture.

Stary Arbat

Stary Arbat (New Arbat) is Moscow's longest pedestrian street. Rich in history, today this street is home to numerous gift shops, small boutiques, restaurants and cafes. In summer, you can listen to street musicians and have your portrait dawn. In winter, a great collection of snowmen awaits those who brave the cold. This street is accessible from either metro Smolenskaya or Arbatskaya.

Novy Arbat

Novy Arbat (New Arbat). Along with Ulitsa Tverskaya (Tverskaya Street), this is one of Moscow's main shopping streets and is also home to a number of clubs, restaurants and bars as well as the famous Dom Knigi (House of Books) across the street from metro Arbatskaya.

Rossiya Hotel

Here are some photos of the former Rossiya Hotel (and its disassembly) that was situated right next to Red Square. This was a huge hotel with several thousand rooms, and while its architecture did not fit into its historical surroundings (Kremlin, Red Square, Ulitsa Varvarka), it will be remembered by many for its concert hall, cinema and for being featured in the famous Soviet movie "Mimino".
