Berlin: April 1942This photo of one of the heavy anti-aircraft guns on the Zoo Tower is posed given the relaxed attitude of the men and the date of April 1942. Daylight raids on Berlin did not start until the end of 1943. The flak artillery in the Third Reich was under the command of the Luftwaffe and if you look very closely on the helmet of the soldier in the foreground carrying the shell, you will see the Luftwaffe eagle, which is sort of flapping its wings, as opposed to the standard army eagle whose wings are straight. The steel cupola to the right, which covers the shell hoist, weighed 72 tons.
