NeuDahn Castle

Fabulous, fun castle near Dahn, Germany. We'd been to the AltDahn castles before, but never could figure out where NeuDahn was. We had a bit of an adventure today, but it was worth it!

The Halloween Costumes

I let them get these really fancy (and expensive) costumes for Halloween this year. We're breaking the cycle of "Jack" themed costumes this year, but it had to happen eventually. Jack really wants to be a Ninja and of course, Ginny wants to be a Princess.

Ginny's Birthday

Gin had a fun birthday. We went to a Medieval Festival at Burg Lichtenberg. She wasn't all that keen to spend part of her birthday there, but she still had fun. There were some cute baby bunnies! Then we had cake with our friends Kyle and Brittany. Ginny got more stuff that she didn't need. But she loves it all!

Swimming at Hambachtal Fereinpark

We went for a day of swimming at this lovely water park. There are 3 pools, one a baby pool, one with a large shallow area for kids. The other has the giant slide, a whirly area, and bubbly areas. So much FUN!

Burg Berwartstein

This is a lovely castle with a very easy drive up. There's a short climb from the parking lot to the castle, but very doable. You can't actually visit much of the castle on your own. There's a guided tour (in German) where the guide tells you quite a lot about everything, but we didn't understand any of it. We got a castle guidebook instead. But we got to go into a lot of the castle on the tour and even some underground passages! Totally worth seeing!

A delightful, ruined castle. So much fun to run around and play there and very quiet with not many visitors.

Sooneck Castle

This is the fanciest castle I've seen on this Whirlwind Tour. Sooneck Castle is on the Rhine River. Such amazing views! Every couple of miles down the road...or less!...we drove past another beautiful castle. You could spend weeks just touring castles along the Rhine River. Apparently, many of them are hotels now. Sooneck Castle was cheap and the entrance fee included a brief 30 minute-ish tour of several rooms in the castle. Unless you take the tour, you can only wander around the outside of the castle. And there is plenty to see!

Burg Trifels

Burg Trifels is a really impressive castle in Annweiler, Germany. King Richard the Lionhearted was held captive there in 1193! Much of the castle is fairly new, the main tower being completed in 1966, but it still has a great medieval feel. Although there is a 20 minute climb to the castle from the parking area, it is well worth the effot to visit!

Burg Landeck

This castle was about 20 minutes from Burg Trifels. It wasn't very large, but had some nice features to explore. We were able to drive all the way up to the castle, but the road was very narrow and I don't think I'll be doing that again!

Castles in Dahn

We visited these castles on October 6th, 2007. There are 3 castles in the group, Altdahn, Grafendahn and Tanstein. We also tried to visit Neudahn (which is another castle a couple miles away), but all roads leading in were private.

Nanstein Castle

What's Les's favorite thing to do? Why, visit castles of course! Nanstein Castle is only about half an hour away. You do have to drive up a one lane road with cars parked along one side and people coming at you from the other direction. It also curves tightly up the side of a hill, but we made it and got to see this cool castle! (Only a small heart attack for Les after driving!)
