Because Texaco said it cleaned a small percentage of the pits, people living in the area thought they were cleaned so they built homes directly on top of toxic waste dumps. Here’s an example at a so-called “remediated” pit at Shushufindi 43.
Texaco falsely claimed to have cleaned Sacha 56, yet oil can be found on top of the surface of the pit today. Contamination levels are 3.6 times the legal limit: 3,600ppm of TPH.
Because Texaco said it cleaned Sacha 56, this family moved into a shack near the pit.
