Bartram Trail: Section 7
Section 7 of the Bartram Trail goes from U.S. 19 in the Nantahala Gorge, northwest and ascends to the top of Cheoah Bald (5,062 ft). After 1.5 hours of steep climbing, entered area of snow, which gradually became deeper. The trail crossed Ledbetter Creek several times, once requiring a ford of ankle/knee deep water. The rocky trail was covered with 6+ inches of snow as it climbed the valley formed by the creek. After 4 miles and 3 hours of climbing, the conditions warranted a retreat, and a vow to return to make the summit on a day with better trail conditions. The sky was clear and blue, temperatures in the 40s. In spite of the exertion and challenge of a dangerous trail, it was a great day in God's beautiful Creation.
