Visit to BVS Elgin, IL with Dan McFadden

This was our first visit to Elgin, IL and was part of our post-Volunteer Service evaluation and de-briefing assignment. Dan McFadden, Director, gave us a tour of the Elgin based operations, introduced us to many workers and volunteers and highlighted some historical changes while looking to the near future. We talked about some of our experiences at the WFC over Thai food and later coffee. Later in the day we headed up the road to Madison, WI to spend the weekend with our daughter Erica and her husband MIke. The journey continues.

Beautiful Benches - Sitting Pretty exhibit brightens downtown Auburn

Colorful artwork is decorating downtown Auburn for the third summer in a row. This year's exhibit, "Sitting Pretty," invited local artists to unleash their creativity on unadorned oak benches. A total of 20 artist responded by creating benches that will be on display though September 11, when they will be sold in a fundraising auction. A 21st bench, designed and painted by 12 participating artists, will be the prize in a charity raffle. Take a close look at all the benches as we take a walking and sitting tour around downtown Auburn, IN - enjoy the color, the creativity and local artist's expressions as we enjoy "Sitting Pretty".

Kent & Sarah's WFC Farewell from Hiroshima Station

WFC's two photographers - Naomi Kurihara & Kent Sweitzer combine the advantages of two different vantage points - "staying and leaving" with a combination duo of perspectives. As Kent & Sarah leave Hiroshima after two years we are saying and hearing others saying - "Sanyonara", "Farewell", "Good-bye", "Jya mata" (see you), "Come visit", - all are intermixed with smiles and tears, hugs and handshakes, bows and gifts and "please come again". Here's are the moments captured - posed and spontaneous, slow motion and high-speed - just like life itself.

Hans & Philip Verhagen's Hiroshima Prefecture Adventure

In 1970 Sarah's Sister Karen lived in Holland with an exchange family including her host Father Hans Verhagen & host Brother Philip Verhagen. Over the years, including three years ago in Amsterdam, we kept in touch and invited them to Japan. And here, half way around the world, they came to see and experience part of our life in Japan - as Hans often says, " Try before you die." At 86, he was up for an adventure including visiting our WFC English Conversation Classes, Peace Memorial Museum and Park, Hiroshima Port, Karaoke, Shukkeine Gardens, Miyajimi Island, Pacela, Kwakuni Bridge & Castle, Transportation Museum, and Japanese dining as well as meal preparation experiences. Many of our friends at the WFC accompanyed Hans and Philip to special events includng the Mazda Museum and even to the Hospital Special thanks to Naomi Kurihara for her photography at the Hiroshima Station and elsewhere in this Album.

A New Recipe for the WFC Kitchen - Made from Scratch

The WFC Kitchen the most common and frequently used areas of the Guesthouse - from baking and cooking, washing dishes and glasses, serving guests breakfast, providing tea, and coffee for members, staff and students and functioning as the Director's "home" kitchen.. From scratch - watch the process from start to finish including final touches. World Friendship Center Facility Improvements 2007-2008-2009

The World Friendship Center serves many functions including accommodations for International Guests visiting Hiroshima as well as a meeting place for local WFC Volunteers, Students and Board Members (Riji). As part of WFC Mission to enhance student and guest activities while improving appearance, comfort and safety, a two year program of facility upgrades has been undertaken with much already accomplished. Here's a look at some of the many projects undertaken by outside experienced contractors (including carpenters and electricians) working in concert with volunteers and Directors in making the WFC an improved facility while still housed within the walls of a traditional Japanese residence style home. Peace Garden Villa - the expanded classroom faciility next door is also featured. January & February 2009 Riji Album

Winter marks the changing seasons with holiday visits from our children and friends, a reduced number of guests from around the world continue their journeys to Hiroshima, a visit to the local Otafuku Okonomiyaki sauce factory, WFC's first "Fun Friday", UNESCO Peace Award, Hans & Philip Verhagen from Holland visit WFC for two weeks, a transformation of the WFC Kitchen takes place while space in the adjacent Peace Garden suites is evaluated, Kent & Sarah take a winter wonderland vacation with the Suda family in Akita Prefecture - all part of the changing times and seasons inside and outside the WFC. A special thanks to Naomi Kurihara for photographing Kitchen renovations while we traveled to and from Akita Prefecture.

Kamifusenage ! !

We headed north to Akita with Sarah's host family to join a winter festival Kamifusenage (Paper Balloon Festival). Over 100 huge paper balloons decorated with pictures of beautiful women, Samaurai warriors, cartoons and colorful designs are lifted slowly into the night sky. It was a perfect full moon and cold winter evening with thousands of people and children on hand to watch and participate. The event includes a prayer for a good harvest and the well-being of family. Join us in Nishiki-mura for this colorful, crisp, and delightful gathering complete with delicious food, a full moon, warming fires, snow huts and even fireworks.

Yogi & Yumiko's New Year Omochi Traditional Gathering

Last year we experienced our first authentic Japanese New Year Omochi making tradition with the Shakuda & Ueda family and friends gathering. This year we were delighted to return and revisit the tradition which embodies some of the family traditional elements of a Thanksgiving and New Year Celebration - something for everyone including plenty of visiting time, wonderful food, and an inter-generational gathering - and now also an international one. Kent and Sarah are joined by their daughter Laura and her friend from California - Molly Russell. Come join the fun, take a few swings, and enjoy the fresh food hot off the grill. WFC Christmas Gathering 2008

On December 23rd, the Emperor's Birthday (a Holiday in Japan) the extended WFC family of students, volunteers, Riji, guests, Directors and friends joined together for a Christmas Program at the WFC. The medley of songs, readings, and talent ranged from classical guitar Greensleeves (What Child is this ?) to Silent Night (in English and Japanese) poetry, paper folding Christmas Tree, piano music, Radio Exercises, Hawaiian Dancing and more. Midway through the gathering a delightful "tea break" was hosted in the dining area and the Peace Garden Villa with the afternoon together marked by warm candle light. A Miyajimi Fall Afternoon

Sarah and I were invited to a special exhibit in the Daishoin Temple (no photography allowed) and then walked up the newly completed Misen Climbing Path (Daishoin Course). Miyajimi - always beautiful and magical in any type of weather showed some of her best as Autumn wanes and winter approaches. Rich colors woven into a mountainous island which escaped the impact of war and the Atomic bomb which exploded over nearby Hiroshima - one of Japan's most visited scenic locations.

Jun san's Saturday Adventure with Naomi & Sarah & Kent

Our Adventure begins on Hijiyama Hill with wonderful autumn views and then we travel to nearly Mt. Ogon-zan. Then we break for some "Viking Style" buffet dining at the Four Seasons in Welcity includng a chocolate fountain, followed by the Hiroshima City Museum of History and Traditional Crafts. Finally, we head to Moto-ujina Park including the Seto Inland Sea in Autumn colors as the Prince Hotel is decked out for the holidays and weddings. A perfect early December day in Hiroshima. Tami-Chan's Long Night

The English Editon has been provided by the World Friendship Center's Translation Class, copyright 1995. Tami-chan's Long Night is a heartfelt recounting of the tradegies of World War II including Japanese military aggression and colonization of Korea and the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The material was designed for Primary School Education including classes with both Korean and Japanese students and now serves as an informative story for those of all ages. The Korean PAX 2008 team was provided a reading of Tami-Chan's Long Night the evening before leaving for Korea in September 2008 Teaching children everywhere about the atrocies of the past and the need to build "bridges of understanding and friendship" is one role of the World Friendship Center, Hiroshima, Japan.

October 2008 Riji kai Web Album

From the front entrance gate to Hot Beverages inside the WFC Entrance, the WFC tradition of welcoming guests from around the world and the neighborhood continues and evolves. Korean PAX members present their experiences along with our Shudo Univeristy Interns at Shudo, Peace Park guides plan and practice joined by former Future Peace Park Guides, WFC Peace Choir grows and sings at PeaceLove (includes photography by Naomi Kurihara- also see Web Album on PeaceLove celebration) and practices in Peace Memorial Park after a picnic. Volunteers join the Directors in making the WFC welcoming and an improved facility and both Kent and Sarah receive different medical treatments in Japan.

Cloudy and rainy weather could not dampen the peaceful spirit of this one day annual event in Hiroshima which includes participation by many varied organizations plus an international selection of freshly prepared foods, exhibits covering the spectrum of needs from alternative energy to international relief efforts. September 2008 Riji Web Album

A busy blend of new experiences are combined into one month - the WFC & Shudo University interns experience and complete their first combined internship, the PAX Korea 2008 group gathers at WFC for a send off party including representatives from Nagasaki, Shudo University and WFC Hiroshima, the NPO Foundation meeting is held, Classes take field trips together accompanied by a visit by Anita (Sarah's sister) and Brother in Law Dave Knechel. Himeji Castle, Koyosan Temple & Mountains & Sera Highland Adventure

Photography by Naomi Kurihara & Kent Sweitzer Here's an early October 2008 adventure through time and nature - we take the train to Himeji and explore the most beautiful castle in Japan; then head to the mountains the following morning and stay at a Temple in Koyosan for two nights, followed by a trip to the Sera Highlands where we walk among millions of flowers in the rain. Dave Goes to Japan for a Haircut...and more !!

Dave and Anita Knechel travel from New Jersey to spend three weeks in Japan. Kent has "pre-sold" Dave on the benefits of receiving a full "haircut-shave-massage" at the local Hiroshima Barber. In addition to traveling half way around the world, via Korea for an attractive airfare package, Dave wants to receive the deluxe treatment for "looking good". Watch as Dave gets transformed from a jet-lagged world traveler to one good looking guy with a relaxed head on his shoulders.

August 2008 Riji kai Web Album

August is hot and humid with many events in motion at the WFC and in the Hiroshima community. Hagi & Tsuwano Adventure

August is hot and humid in the City of Hiroshima so it is time to experience some ocean and mountain breezes and get a change of scenery. Come along for a three day trip to Hagi (pop 45,000) by the Japan Sea & Tsuwano (pop 5,900) in the mountains where the carp outnumber the townfolks ten to one. We walk in the ocean, climb mountains, feed fish, make Japanese paper, meet a family that lives in a Temple and much more. And then we join Yoji & Yumiko Shakuda in Tsuwano for the afternoon and ride back to Hiroshima together.

Hiroshima Carp Peace Game 2008

It looks like rain on the night of the Hiroshima Carp Peace Game. Join the chants, the cheers, the trumpets, drums and flags on a summer August night in Hiroshima. See how the 7th inning is marked in Japan. Kent & Sarah along with Naomi, Yumiko, Eiko and Yoshie's sister and niece - Manami - all cheer the Hiroshima Carp onto a 5-1 victory over the Tokyo Yakult Swallows (Tsubame)..

Naomi's Brother Shinji san visits the WFC

Naomi, our WFC Office Staff, has an older Brother (Niisan) Shinji Tarumoto who now lives in Fukuyoka and sometimes comes back to visit family in Hiroshima. We wanted to meet him so this was our chance. Here's his look at the WFC, lunch at Zen -one of our favorites, a walk through the neighborhood including a local playground for kids and back to the WFC.

Remembering Doctor Tomin Harada (1912-1999) during Obon

Inside the doorway of the World Friendship Center is a portrait by Haguma san of an older man holding a rose. The man is the first and former Chairman of the Board of the WFC- Doctor Tomin Harada (1965 to 1986). A Japanese Army surgeon, writer and inspiration for peace, Doctor Harada took the torch from Barbara Reynolds and carried her vision of the WFC into the future. Shinji Yoshida, a contractor that was doing some renovation work at the WFC, accompanied Naomi and Kent to the graveyard stone of Doctor Tomin Harada. When Shinji Yoshida was in Junior High School he had a part time job as a newspaper delivery boy. In an accident while riding his bicycle he hit the back of a van window and in an effort to break the impact his arm and hand went through the window. It was Doctor Harada that stitched up his arm - the precise minimal scar still remains to this day as a reminder of the Doctor's excellent suturing skills. Join us as we remember Doctor Harada during Obon.

August 6th 2008 - Peace Memorial Ceremony & Events at WFC

On August 6th, 2008, friends, guests, visitors, volunteers, and spontaneous community joined the World Friendship Center in the activities and traditions of Hiroshima and the World Friendship Center. From the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony attended by over 45,000 to the intimate gathering on 12 tatami mats at the WFC - everywhere we find young and old gathering for a peaceful world that embraces peace making and understanding among people.

The hot and humid days of July 2008 bring many firsts to the WFC: our first 300 plus guest-nights, 18 for breakfast, tall guests, a jet lagged baby, video conference learning half way around the world, solar lights in the Peace Garden entrance. the first breakfast in Peace Garden Villa, Korean PAX planning and PAX introductions, Naomi's Mom and Niece visit the WFC, Hiroshima Port Fireworks with Miyoko Matsubara & Kaori san, Tsubasa Kun gets a bicycle helmet, volume purchases of yogurt and jam, the land next door receives its' blessing, and we learn how to stay super cool at the WFC.

Sora Sensei tells her story to the AICJ Peace Club

The AICJ Junior High School has an international emphasis to promote cross-cultural understanding and dialogue with other around the globe. Junior High students speak and understand English and learn to achieve more than absorbing conventional academic knowledge.. Through the interests of the AICJ Principals and faculty including Krishna Somanah, the WFC partnered for the first time with an emerging program at AICJ - a Peace Club for Junior High Students. The poem, Growing Up in Hiroshima beings - Welcome, glad you've arrived. Won't you lend me your ears for a while, Was bombed, my mother and I, and we experienced Living Hell. But my mother never once talked about Blaming, nor having Hatred toward the Others. People around me, People of Hiroshima, not once did I witness Blaming the Others. so no hatred nor any kind of animosity grew in the heart of the Child. Mike & Erica Get Married - the Gathering and Celebration - June 21st 2008

Beautiful acoustic music and joy and laughter filled the air as the family and friends of Mike Beckman and Erica Sweitzer gathered on the lakefront on a beautiful blue sky and puffy cloud day to celebrate their marriage. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 blended with Matthew 6: 24-34 accompanied by the Gathering and Servant Songs, Alleluia, Time is the Day and We are called. Officiant by Rev. Don Shankster, Uncle of the bride: Bride's Witness: Laura Ann Sweitzer, sister; Groom's Witness: Jonathan Ferris-Bohorquez; Greeters: Ambryan Melius, Bethany Mueller, Mae Phillips, and Meggan Shortall, Liturgical Musicians: Melissa Behrie, Neela Kale and Sara Schulte and Ambient Musicians; Jeff Gottlieb & Matthrew Hayes; Lector: Jennifer Barger; Logistical Support: Beth Sweitzer-Riley and Jim Riley. Captain Beckman & the Panda Brothers Go Flying

Bob Beckman, Mike's Dad, pilots a Beechcraft G36 from the Madison airport. After all of the recent rains he thought it would be an adventure to check out the reports of flooding from the air plus the Panda Brothers, having arrived from Indiana the evening before, are ready to get moving. Here we go up in the air over the dairyland, fields, streams and lakes that surround Madison topped off by some breakfast fuel upon landing. A Weekend in Madison, Wisconsin

With a week to go before Mike and Erica's wedding there are many connections and events and happenings along the way. The moving van from California arrives and is unloaded, dinner at Pam's & Bruce's, we explore the Saturday morning marketplace in the capital square, meet Kathy and have lunch at Marigolds, and visit Bob and Kathy in the country for wonderful food and conversation. Monday morning includes a Sweitzer weekend family tradition - pancakes. This is a weekend including new "homecomings" and new family and new places to discover - worlds away from our home in Japan but nevertheless - part of our home and extended family. Join us for a weekend visit to Madison and Middleton, Wisconsin.

Uncle Kent visits Brother Glenn & nephews in Taipei, Taiwan

Kent's brother Glenn is teaching an architectural course for several weeks at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology in Taipei, Taiwan. Along on the journey are Kent's nephews Bryan Henry,7 and Leo Albert,4. They attend school during the week but since they have not seen Uncle Kent (called U.K for this visit) for one year, they are ready to connect and explore during the evenings, mornings and weekend. Here's the story of two brothers living on two island countries close to each other in another world, along with two brothers from the next generation.

As I explored Taipei, Taiwan I discovered a gem near the Tamsui Wharf after taking the MRT to Danshui. There I met Maggie of PM Bistro Studio along with Lucy, her assistant in training and an Assistant Chef Ray. They shared their studio lite space and their talents with me for a delightful lunch. In addition to gourmet food photography I brought some of the homemade delights back to Japan for further enjoyment. Golden Week is Golden - Hiroshima Flower Festival

May 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th are the heart of Golden Week - a time of festivals and celebrations, parades and singing, dancing, wonderful foods and lights and colors. A time for the International City of Peace - Hiroshima, to welcome the world to Peace Memorial Park for a celebration. Much more than flowers but they are here too, along with beautiful children, costumes, music, singing, dancing - from babies to Grandparents a time to celebrate the coming of Summer and connect with other cultures - from Hawaii to Thailand, and China and Japan - take a look at the joy and peaceful sharing that have come to Hiroshima during the day and the night.

The "What's Going Down?" Next Door Blues

To everything there is a season. A time to build and a time to tear down. Our World is filled with many changes including those that often happen right next door. Take a look directly east of the World Friendship Center to some images of Japan as the old is taken away to make room for the new - part of the cycle in a country of 145 million people living on a land footprint the size of California, surrounded by sea and 85 percent mountainous. Land usage becomes precious and there are very few single story dwellings that remain in this city which was destroyed completely in 1945 and which has undergone building and rebuilding ever since. And yes, we miss the bright blue tiles and the sunset red Camelia bush.

WFC Guests - Young, younger and youngest

Rory, Julia & Indigo (1 year old), along with Conor, Tracey, Amelie (6 years old) and Oran ( 7 months) makes for one of our youngest family gathering at the WFC. Breakfast was lively with many new sounds including Amelie putting her hands over Oran's mouth making modulated tones, and Indigo crawling under the table. Take a look as Brothers and Cousins gather at the WFC and contribute to the creation of a record breaking Spring March with over 230 Guest Nights. Accommodations at the WFC now include Peace Library, Music Room, Peace Garden Villa and Sakura in addition to the remodeled Asagao and Momiji.

Setsubun - February 3rd, 2008

In Japan, Setsubun is the day before the beginning of each season - the term usually refers to the spring Setsubun, properly called Risshun which is celebrated yearly on February 3rd, in association with the Lunar New Year. One of the special rituals is to cleanse away all the evil of the former year and drive away disease-bringing evil spirits for the coming year. This special ritual is called mamemaki (bean scattering) The oni (demon or orge) is greeted by the throwing of pan heated soybeans (irimame) and the chant " Oni wa soto!! Fuku wa uchi ! Demons out ! Luck in !" A famous Buddhist monk was said to have driven away oni in the Heian era, by throwing beans - a long tradition continues at the Sumiyoshi Shrine.

Memorial Cathedral for World Peace

The pastor at the time of the August 6th, 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Jesuit Father Hugo Enomiya-Lassalle, decided that the cathedral should be rebuilt as a memorial to those who perished and as a symbol of international friendship and peace. Designed by Togo Nomura, the new cathedral was completed in 1954, with people of various countries and religions donating gifts and furnishings. This is one of the largest Roman Catholic churches in Asia. The four bells in the 150 ft (46 meter) high tower were presented by the German town of Bochum, the organ by Cologne and the bronze doors by Dusseldorf. The altar was presented by Belgium. The dark grey bricks on portions of the outside structure were made from bombed soil - the Phoenix symbol is often the symbol of Hiroshima - rising from the ashes as the mythical bird. Following a Peace Memorial service Kent & Sarah received a private tour of the Cathedral, including a climb of the bell tower for a spectacular view of Hiroshima.

Sachiko's Family New Year's Celebration 2008

On January the 3rd, 2008, Kent, Sarah, and Laura joined Sachiko Hiraoka, and her extended family for a festive, traditional Japanese New Year celebration at her home in Eba. Sachiko is a very active WFC supporter including her role as a Riji Member, Volunteer, and student. Join us as we celebrate the New Year of 2008 - the Year of the Mouse,with Sachiko and her husband, son, and all of the Aunts, Uncles,In-Laws, Nieces and Nephew - what a celebration and take a look at the food and festivities including dancing and games.

New Year Traditional Rice Cake (Omochi) Making at Yoji & Yumiko Shakuda's Yuki-cho Mountain Home

The annual Omochi Gathering (Japanese Rice Cakes making event) has been hosted by the Shakuda-Udea family for 25 years. The origins of the tradition date back to the 14th -16th century. Kagami mochi, literally mirror rice cake, is often used to symbolize the continuation of family from generation to generation. Later, the supply of rice cakes became the staple for many days of eating, since shops and stores were closed in order to honor traditions at Temples and Shrines. A few days before the New Year was rung in, we were invited by Yoji and Yumiko Shakuda and their extended family to join the tradition along with their many friends. Joining Kent and Sarah are their two daughters Laura and Erica and future son in law Mike Beckman. Watch the blend of tradition with the present and savor the mountain air along with the smells of freshly prepared foods from Japan's bountiful harvest; as several generations participate in a unique and heart warming New Year's celebration.

A Winter's Day - Magical Miyajima & Mt. Misen

Nearby Miyajima Island is one of the most scenic destinations in Japan including mountains, streams, rich green forests, many trails and streams accompanied by a rich history including religious traditions and hidden gems. Miyajima Island was outside of the radius of the A-bomb's destruction and therefore its older treasures remain intact. Enjoy the Winter afternoon and evening of December 30th with Kent and Laura as we explore Miyajima including Mt. Misen. Earlier we were accompanied by Sarah, Erica and Mike, but as you will see the weather conditions changed fairly quickly.

Jesuit Novitiate at Nagatsuka - Father Pedro Arrupe's Journey

Drawing on his earlier training in medicine, in Spain, Pedro Arrupe converted the Novitiate into an emergency hospital and his novices into nurses as they responded to the aftermath of the A-bombing of Hiroshima. During Mike's & Erica's visit from CA., on the day after Christmas, we visited the Novitiate and met Sister Kazuko Murakami. She shared the Pedro Arrupe story -how one of the most influential religious, dynamic and motivational figures of our time, transformed the Novitiate at Nagatsuka (due N of the A-bomb hypo center in Hiroshima) into a care facility for about 150 people suffering from injuries and the effects of nuclear radiation - of these, only one child died. Learn more about the man that once graced the cover of Time Magazine as we visit Sister Kazuyo Murakami and learn how Jesuits serve the Church by being at the growing edge where the church is constantly running. Making Peace Candles at the World Friendship Center

Each year during the Peace Memorial Events in Hiroshima on August 6th; Peace Candles now adorn the Atomic Bomb Dome fence and outside area. The candles are often made by school children (please see ending of this slideshow) and glow when lit - sending out light and highlighting the messages inscribed on them. The architect of the "make-your-own" Peace candles was located and agreed to come to the WFC and teach the art of making Peace Candles. Here are photos showing the assembly process of the first Peace Candles made at the WFC, as well as their use to adorn the WFC walkway to welcome in the New Year of 2008. Waterproof Rice: "Professor Nick" Lectures WFC Hiroshima Class & also makes Peace Cranes

9 year old Nicholas Serres presented material on "Water-proof rice, plant stress, and the SUB1 gene discovery" and how the information is used to feed the world's hungry. Millions and millions of the world's people depend on rice grown by small farmers. When a crop is destroyed by typhoons, monsoons or flooding, the results are predictably disastrous. SUB1 rice goes to sleep under water and saves energy for growth after the water recedes. Professor Nicholas was joined by his Dad Mark and Sister Aisha Serres. Class attendees including Michiko Yamane, Sora Sensei (Fumiko), Mieko Yamashita, Takako Hiramoto, and Sumiko Kanetsuna, along with class instructor Kent Sweitzer. Nicholas' Mother, Julia Bailey-Serres is a Professor of Genetics with the Center for Plant Cell Biology and the Department of Botany & Plant Sciences at UC Riverside, California. She also has done pioneering work with the IRRI (International Rice Research Institute).

Sarah's Birthday Weekend in Hiroshima

Sarah celebrates her Birthday in Japan with a treat at a Hiroshima Hawaiian Restaurant by Naomi and Hiroyuki, followed by an afternoon and evening the next day in Miyajima, and then to a Dream World on Peace Blvd. On Sunday an International Peace Speech Contest included many fine foods from Japan - take a look at how Sarah celebrated her Birthday Weekend in Hiroshima, including many lovely colors of foods and lights.

Akita Reunion Adventure - Kent & Sarah visit Sarah's 4-H Exchange Host Family in Northern Japan

This adventure started many years ago - in 1969 when Sarah Haynes ventured to Japan as a 4-H teen caravan summer exchange student. Then she lived for six weeks with the Suda family in rural Akita Prefecture near the small town of Nishime. In 1976, after Kent and Sarah were married, they returned to Akita Prefecture and Nishime. Seiichi, her host brother, had married Taeko and they had a young toddler son, Takashi. We took some pictures during our stay - some which we mailed to them after our stay in 1976 and some new prints which we made after arriving in Hiroshima in 2007. Here is our adventure of four days as we reunited -now that we are living in the same country of Japan. Our Fall 2007 adventures spans four days and includes many local and family experiences from visiting an apple orchard and the family mushroom operations to learning about Kiritanpo manufacturing and experiencing an array of new foods and scenery - please enjoy the Akita Reunion Adventure along with Kent & Sarah.

Calligraphy Exhibit - Prefectural Art Museum, Hiroshima

Morishita Sensei provided five tickets to a calligraphy exhibit at the Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum including his own submitted work. Kent & Sarah are joined by Naomi, Mieko san, and Chizako san as they explore the world of calligraphy. Calligraphy - from the Greek "kallos" meaning beauty + graphe for "writing" - come join us as the five of us explore the world of "beautiful writing" in Hiroshima's Prefectural Art Museum immediately adjacent to the lovely Shukkeien Garden.

Tsunehiko Miyake's Story - War & Peace & life's journey

Tsunehiko Miyake was born in 1915 and tells his story to Michiko Yamane - her questions were prepared by Kari Speer, an employee of Tempus Technologies in Indiana, who is now a student at IPFW. Her assignment was to interview veterans of WWII - she elected to interview an American, German, and with Kent & Sarah in Japan - a Japanese WWII veteran. Kent photographed and documented the story including an interview at Mr. and Mrs. Miyake's 7th floor apartment in Hiroshima. Please join us during this captivating interview as we travel through many countries during war and peace, and learn where life has taken the Miyake couple - now 92 and 85 years old respectively.

Jyakuchi Kyo Waterfalls & Mountain Adventure

When it is hot and humid in Hiroshima in August -what can you do ? Head to the mountains and waterfalls of Jyakuchi Kyo for a cookout, mountain hiking, and cooling down in mountain streams. Kent & Sarah join Yoji & Yumiko Shakuda and their daughter Akiko, along with friends Tamaki san and his daughter Asuka. Tamaki san is a great outdoor grill chef and created a wonderful B-B-Q of meats and veggies enjoyed by everyone. Jyaku means silent and chi means place, while Kyo means between the mountains. We went to the silent place between the mountains for a refreshing mountain experience.

Following the August 1 - 6th time in Hiroshima, the PAX 2007 Team and the WFC Directors went to Nagasaki for August 7, 8th, 9th and the morning of the 10th. Events and experiences included home stays, Nagasaki Memorial Anniversary of the A-bomb on August 9th, tour of the Radiation Effects Research Foundation with Akihiho Suyama, M.D, Ph.D, meals and evening sharing and worship with members and friends of the Nagasaki Baptist Church including Pastor Yasushi Tomono, Rev. and the Youth Director Shinichi Nishiwaki, a tour of the A-bomb sites in Nagasaki including church and hypo-center, an evening at Cento Anni's and much more.

PAX Team 2007 gathered at the World Friendship Center in Hiroshima, Japan for the experience and events of August 1 - August 6th. Hiroshima Port Fireworks - July summer evening

Yoshie invited Naomi, Sarah and Kent to attend the fireworks at Hiroshima Port. We took the Hiroshima Port tram to the event - very crowded one car, watched an amazing one hour firework show synced to music, and then due to crowded tram cars we walked back to the WFC. Many young women wore summer Yukatas as part of the festival which added color to the event. Tens of thousands watched the event from streets and hotels, while tens of thousands more paid to get a sea front view next to the harbor. Our summer walk back home took about 1 1/2 hours and we had company most of the way - Hiroshima is a tram and walking city & older folks as well as young venture out in the evening and at night.
