Mt. Lebanon High School Students

On Friday, January 30, 2009, over 1,500 students participated in a variety of "in-house" projects to benefit nonprofit organizations in Pittsburgh. Projects included such things as making and packing lunches for the homeless at Light of Life and Miryam's.

Toys for Tots 2008

Through a partnership between the U.S. Marines, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Pittsburgh Cares, Toys for Tots served over 100 agencies this year, filling 119 orders from the warehouse.

Pittsburgh Cares Nonprofit Marketplace

Over 100 people attended the first Pittsburgh Cares Nonprofit Marketplace on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Chatham University! Vendors included: the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Easter Seals, Beginning with Books, Friends of the World Food Program, the WPA Humane Society, Good Grief Center, Teen Oasis, the Alzheimer’s Association, Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild, Providence Connections, Holy Family Church, Pittsburgh Cares, Milestone, Gwen’s Girls, Dawn Wallhausen (benefiting Just Harvest) and Tiffany Tupper (benefiting Make-A-Wish).

Bayer Corporation Born Learning Trail Installation

Bayer Corporation spent their Day of Caring at Settler's Cabin, installing a Born Learning Trail, which provide a non-threatening way to enhance parents’ awareness of how to promote early learning. The Trail includes 10 posters – a "Watch" Sign, "Look" Sign, "Talk" Sign, "See" Sign, "Create" Sign, "Jump" Sign, Toss" Sign, "Describe" Sign, "Listen" Sign.

Target Library Build

Staff and students from Propel HOMESTEAD, along with Pittsburgh Cares and Target Volunteers, worked together to build the schools FIRST library on Monday, September 29th. As part of the Target Volunteers school library makeovers, 100 volunteers contructed a library equipped with new books, murals and reading nooks. Thanks to a strong relationship with Pittsburgh Cares, Propel HOMESTEAD was selected by Target as one of twenty-three schools across the country to conduct a library makeover.

PPG Day of Caring House Build

About 25 PPG employees – including electricians, maintenance personnel, information technology specialists and chemists – converged on this five-bedroom home, purchased by a fellow co-worker before his untimely passing. They put up drywall in the kitchen; installed a new bathroom (flooring, bathtub, vanity and fixtures); installed a new closet; cleaned and painted bedrooms; cleaned and landscaped the yard; repaired the family's computer; and other general cleaning and maintenance chores. Volunteers will continue to work on installing kitchen flooring and cabinets and plan to work on the home until it is complete. Watch out Ty Pennington…PPG employees are close behind!

MLK Muraling Project

Pittsburgh Cares, Openstage Theatre, and the MLK Community Mural Project, also know as Moving the Lives of Kids Mural Project, partnered in July and August 2008 to paint a mural with eight Pittsburgh youth. The youth involved in the project were aspiring young artists from all over the city of Pittsburgh. The youth involved learned about the historic figures and events of their neighborhoods and then translated what they learned into beautiful organic images on the walls. This particular Mural located right on Smallman Street is an ode to the Strip district’s long and rich history as well as Pittsburgh’s theatre history.

Exploring Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Cares summer Heinz Endowment Interns were given an assignment to take pictures of images in Pittsburgh neighborhoods that they found both empowering and disempowering. This is the story through their eyes. Neighborhoods included the Strip District, Lawrenceville, Garfield, East Liberty, Homewood and Friendship.
