Karon Beach in the rain - it poured our entire first day in Phuket
Monica scopes out the waves. They were huge and neverending! We didn't so much swim as get continuously pummeled.
Signs like this are scattered all about. The taller, sturdier buildings have signs in front designating them tsunami shelters, with a drawing of people running up stairs
Monkeys eating fruit!
Monkeys walking around!
I loved the monkeys
This couple bought bananas to feed the monkeys - and they swarmed them! At one point the man had several on his shoulders.
Our 20-year-old elephant driver, designated "ladyboy" by another driver
The elephants ably managed the tropical mud
I made it onto the elephant! The leathery hide with bristly hair was super weird against my bare feet.
Just another day on an elephant in the jungle
All the guides rode right on the elephants' heads, not even on their necks, and still had no trouble keeping their balance
Our driver jumped off to take photos of us and our elephant just kept cruising along
Ladyboy (still on the ground) urged Monica to climb up on our elephant's head - and she did! She perilously rode that way until the end. I am still amazed she managed to stay on
