Malaysian money - so colorful!
Monica took a photo of the lovely squat toilet, first encountered in Malaysia and seen many, many times since. I have thus far avoided ever having to use one and am determined to keep it that way
The Melaka River, which ran right behind our hostel. You can see the city has put a great deal of effort into building nice walkways along both sides of the river. The smell is not that pleasant, however
Chicken rice ball, one of Malaysia's famous dishes. Pieces of grilled chicken are served with packed rice balls, ginger-chili sauce, and a bit of cucumber. It was quite good, though I would prefer the rice loose and fluffy
Fabulously ornate temple, Jonker Street
Side street off Jonker
Famed Jonker Street by night
The Melaka River near Victoria Fountain
Side street near our hostel, brilliantly lit with red lamps & hanging lanterns. It was magical
On the Jetty in the Straits of Malacca
The river from the second-story balcony of our hostel
On the river cruise! It was just Monica, me, and a Chinese couple
The Malaysian flag, painted onto the metal roof of a traditional Malay house
Malacca from the river. (It did not all look this lovely, however)
Pineapple tarts - traditional Malaysian sweet. Our hostel lady gave them to us and they were excellent
Baba laksa, tradtional Malaysian dish. Spicy soup of noodles, fried dough balls, chicken, prawn, red onion, and shaved cucumber. It was good but eventually the spice became too much for me
Cendol, THE Malaysian dessert. Shaved ice doused with thick black sugar syrup is placed over - and I am not kidding - jellied green beans, kidney beans, and corn. Yes. It was a most bizarre mix
Cendol after the extreme heat melted the ice (also because I could not eat such a strange dish fast enough). See? There really are kidney beans!! I searched and searched but could not discover any corn in my bowl, though
The Straits of Malacca and the Eye on Malaysia, the city's large Ferris wheel
