Spider Monkey-at some tourist sites they get unfortunatly used to humans and try to extort treats. This can happen to an extend that they become a nuisance. When we opened the car door, this monkey entered the car with lightning speed, grabbed a bottle with Coke, and disappeared with it into the jungle. Whitetailed (?) Deer
Lion Baby, at Mahahual Military Checkpoint. Not a Yucatan native but confiscated from smugglers.
young spider monkey (unfortunatly) kept as a pet and atraction at a small restaurant. The picture was taken early in the morning after an unusually cold night (about 50oF). The monkey huddled in a cardboard box seemingly to stay warm. Hiding with him in the box was a baby Mico Leon (also a pet at the restaurant). We first thought it is an off-color baby. Both animals were clearly affected to each other.

Mico Leon (Kinkajou), small tree-climbing fruit eater. They are fairly common, but difficult to photograph in thick tree vegeation. This one was rescued and handfed as a baby and is very tame. These animals were once classified as lemures- but they belong to the carnivore family

Aguti, a rabbit-sized, tail-less rodent. The Aguti is related to and somehow also resembles Guinea Pigs. This picture was taken at nightfall on the beachroad at km 13 (south or Mahahual). Ten years ago Agutis lived also at Casa del Cielo de las Estrellas. The proliferation of free-roaming dogs (including our guard dogs) along the beach road is probably a reason that Agutis are rarely encountered now.

One day I discovered a large fruit bat hanging from a tree unusually low above ground. It was either sick or a baby. I asked a specialist and he determined (based on the pictures) that this is probably a juvenile of Artibeus jamaicensis. During dawn many fruit bats roam the jungle area of our property. During the day they seem to be hidden under palm fronds in Chi'it Palms. A favored fruit for these bats seem to be the fruits of the Guarumo tree.
