Check if nuts have milk (shake them). The nut is hidden inside the green fruit tissue, which is about 1/2 inch thick. At this maturity stage, the nut contains about 80-90% liquid (the milk) and a thin layer of coconut flesh.
For accessing the milk the most simple method is to drill a big hole using a large carpenter hand drill. You cant find these nowadays in hardware stores. The one in the house I obtained at an antique mall in the US. Locals open coco nuts with a machete, but this requires specific experience (you can ask our caretaker to open a nut for you) and is not without risk for injuries.
Drilling does not require any skills. Before beginning to drill it is best you tap the drill with a hammer through the outer flesh of the fruit until it reaches the hard surface of the nut shell.
Drill until you reach the inner of the nut.
While drilling be careful not to spill milk on your clothes. If it happens, rinse your clothes immediately with water and wash them with warm water with a detergent. Otherwise polyphenols in the milk will oxidize and leave black spots that cannot be removed by washing later.
Use a straw to access the milk.
Fresh coconut milk is an excellent thirst-quenching beverage. High levels of antioxidants are beneficial for your health.
