Home for Good: Solutions Start Here 2012

More than 330 MHSA members, friends and supporters gathered in the Rooftop Ballroom of the Omni Parker House Hotel on May 16 for the ninth annual Home for Good: Solutions Start Here event. The evening honored Phil Johnston of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation, MHSA Board Chair Pamela Feingold of Eastern Bank, and Mark Winkeller of Caritas Communities while raising critical funds to support MHSA's mission to end homelessness.

Flip the Switch to End Homelessness

On December 28, MHSA held its Flip the Switch to End Homelessness reception, generously sponsored by Eastern Bank. The gathering took place at The Shops at Prudential Center as part of the Pru's 31 Nights of Light program, an event that allows community organizations to gain key visibility during the holiday season. As part of the event, the Prudential Tower was lit up blue for the night in honor of MHSA.

On December 13, 2011 the Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance (MHSA) held its Annual Meeting at the Nine Zero Hotel in downtown Boston, honoring House Majority Leader Ronald Mariano and Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s Housing Advisor, Sheila Dillon.

On Wednesday, March 2, faith community representatives, service providers and advocates gathered at University Lutheran Church in Cambridge. The event, hosted by Social Action Ministries and One Family, Inc., focused on the Patrick-Murray Administration’s plan to implement a Housing First solution to family homelessness in Massachusetts.

MHSA 2010 Annual Meeting

MHSA member agencies, donors, young professionals and members of the MHSA Board of Directors attended the MHSA 2010 Annual Meeting on Tuesday, December 28, at the law firm of Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky and Popeo. The annual meeting honored Thomas M. Menino, Mayor of the City of Boston, for his unyielding resolve and commitment to ending homelessness.

Leading the Way: Ending Homelessness in Boston

Social Action Ministries and the Boston Regional Network to End Homelessness, with the support of Episcopal City Mission, One Family Inc. and The Paul and Phyllis Fireman Charitable Foundation, held a half-day retreat for religious and lay leaders from across Boston and across faiths to commit to working together to end homelessness.

On Monday, September 20, the Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance (MHSA) hosted Homecoming 2010: Honoring Achievements in Ending Chronic Homelessness at The Beechwood Hotel in Worcester. More than 140 public officials, executive directors, funders and concerned citizens joined MHSA in honoring Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray, Lowell City Manager Bernard F. Lynch of the Merrimack Valley Regional Network, Department of Mental Health Area Housing Coordinator David Modzelewski of the Western Massachusetts Network and Worcester City Manager Michael V. Social Innovation Forum 2010 Showcase Event

The MHSA Housing First initiative Home & Healthy for Good was chosen as a 2010 “Social Innovator” by Root Cause and its Social Innovation Forum for demonstrating a promising solution to the pressing social problem of homelessness. On May 4, 2010, MHSA President & Executive Director Joe Finn presented Home & Healthy for Good to an audience of more than 200 philanthropists, social impact investors, foundations and business leaders at the Seventh Annual Social Innovation Forum Showcase Event.

Barbara - Home & Healthy for Good

Photos by Bridget Tivnan. Meet Barbara: Between her abusive boyfriend and various health problems from a heart attack to cancer, Barbara’s life wasn’t easy. Ending up on the streets, Barbara was in and out of homeless shelters for years. Things turned around when she started working with a case manager from Heading Home, who placed her into her own apartment through MHSA’s Home & Healthy for Good initiative. Having a home gave Barbara the stability she needed - her health has improved and she is now safe. She “takes each new day as it comes,” and is very grateful for her new life.

Jim - Journey to Success

Photos by Bridget Tivnan Jim, a tenant in the MHSA Journey to Success permanent housing program, spent years battling alcoholism. When he finally learned of Journey to Success, his life turned around. As Jim puts it, he needed to have “a base of operations,” a stable place to call home - not simply a cot in a shelter - if he was to ever escape homelessness and find full-time, meaningful employment. Now that he’s home, Jim feels safe, secure – and able to concentrate on his future. The best part of Jim’s day is when he turns his key, opens his door and knows he’s finally home.

A Faith Community Summit on Homelessness

Social Action Ministries of the Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance, in collaboration with Episcopal City Mission, One Family, Inc., and United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley held “A Faith Community Summit on Homelessness,” a dinner forum and discussion on the ways faith communities can be effective partners to end homelessness in Massachusetts. The dinner, catered by Forklift Catering, was held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Framingham.
