Wood Bridge 2010

Thanks to all the CE volunteers for making the 2010 Wood Bridge Challenge a fantastic event! We crushed a modern-day record 91 bridges and had over 100 students cycle through without a single hiccup. The students, parents, and teachers had a terrific time and hopefully learned a little structural engineering in the process. We saw a lot of haunched trusses this year due to a 2 inch clearance requirement along the main span. These typically started out as trusses and quickly turned to long span beams as the glue connections at the tension members popped. The state runner-up, however, had a nice deck-tied arch bridge that yielded an efficiency of over 1200.

The Latrobe Bowl 2008

Mechanical engineers and civil engineers at JHU share the same building. This sparked off a great rivalry on the field, as the undergrad civil engineering team squared off against the mechanical engineering team in a good game of football.

Paper Column Challenge 2007

Back by popular demand, the Paper Column Contest was held on December 4, 2007. The contest was open to all graduate students, undergraduates and our high school researchers and visitors. Contestants were allowed to design a column using no more than 6 sheets of copy machine paper, and scotch tape around the perimeter and two ends of the completed cross section. Congratulations to Luiz Vieira, the Brazilian Baker, paper column champion of JHU. Luiz's column carried 176.7 lbs - yes, that's one ounce of paper, standing 11 inches tall, carrying 176.7 lbs.

Latrobe Engineers at the Tower of Hour Half Hour

The Tower of Hour Half Hour was an undergraduate competition to build the tallest tower out of only pasta and marshmallows in 30 minutes. It was sponsored by the Whiting School of Engineering during Engineering Week in Spring 2008.

Maryland Wood Bridge Challenge 2008

Thanks to all our volunteers for making the Maryland Wood Bridge Challenge another great success! We cranked through about 50 bass wood bridges and 1 coffee stirrer bridge without any problems. The state winner had an efficiency of over 2700, the lightest bridge was 1.7 grams and the highest load carried was 107 lbs. We saw several stiff beam bridges this year, one of which exploded and actually hit the ceiling, much to the delight of the crowd. The contestants had loads of fun and hopefully learned a bit too. Everyone, including students, parents and judges, were very appreciative of your time, efforts and willingness to help and made this clear during and after the awards ceremony. Hopkins Civil Engineering was very well represented!
