Syria: Damascus/Maaloula
Damascus: the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world.
Maaloula: the only place in the world where Aramaic, the language spoken by Christ, is still spoken. Mar Taqla monastery holds the remains of St. Taqla; daughter of one of Seleucid princes, and pupil of St. Paul. According to legend, in the 1st century AD, St. Taqla was being pursued by soldiers of her father to capture her because of her Christian faith. She came upon a mountain, and after praying, the mountain split open and let her escape through. Maaloula means 'entrance' in Aramaic.
