Temple at the Grand Palace
Entrance to the temple grounds
Guards of the temple; they keep the evil spirits out
Tiered roofs, common in Thai architecture
Hand-painted mural, each “window” of the mural tells part of a story. The mural is enormous, probably hundreds of ”windows“
Mural is called a Ramakien
The temple buildings are stucco covered in gold-leaf “tiles” - it's extraordinary to think of the hours of labor that go into these buildings!
Model of the famous Angkor Wat temple in Cambodia
The 66-inch tall Emerald Buddha. Whereas the other temple buildings are gold-leaf, this building is all 18 carat gold!
Pong and some of the “windows” of the Ramakien mural
The entrance the the palace; the only way to get in was to arrive by elephant (see, no stairs from the ground)
Short elephants arrived at the steps on the left; tall elephants at the steps on the right
Walk outside the Grand Palace walls
Workers planting flowers in the median; this is King's Road
The government buildings (and many other buildings) are draped in blue because the Queen's birthday was Aug 12, and the country celebrates for 1 month before and 1 month after. Blue is the Queen's color because she was born on a Monday. Every day has its own color and women will often wear the color of the day.
Chatuchak Weekend Market
truemove, not exactly sure who these folks are, but they paraded around the streets of the market, singing, dancing and drawing a lot of attention
Chatuchak market is to the right, note all the buses, vans, taxis (the bright yellow, pink & blue cars) offering folks transport. What you can't see are all the tuk-tuks and motorcycles-for-hire lined up for the same purpose.
Lovely little park just up the street from my apartment. Found it on my way from the SkyTrain back home after the market.
My apartment building from the outside. I'm on the first floor so you can't see me from here.
Soi 10, which is the name of the road the apartment building is on.
Snacks in the meeting rooms. These are fish strips. Literally strips of dried fish, eaten as a snack. Strange as it sounds, it's really yummy.
