on the walk to the festival...wait a second!?!
ladies & gentlemen, The Hives!
They went on at 3:30...
we knew this, but got a late start and stopped a couple times en route...
they were in the middle of introducing the band when we got there
which led to a drawn out last bit for their last song...
Pelle instructing the crowd to let him walk thru the middle
action shot!
Pelle tries to get the crowd to sit down for the last song...
...settles for squatting since the ground is soaked from the early afternoon rain
everyone jumps up as Pelle runs back onto the stage
yep, we got there just in time...
to give the drummer some!
and to hear...
the last half of the...
last song (Tick Tick Boom!) and then...
thank you and goodnight, Philadelphia! more like "afternoon"...you deserved a better timeslot, boys!
Ninja Roadie/extra Hives tambourine man!
Eakins Oval George Washington statue
done by a German sculptor in 1897
we stood next to the fountain while catching a bit of Jill Scott's set
the Museum of Art was directly behind the main stage
Rocky statue in front of Art Museum
Jill Scott
Philly radio row...
racing cars in the Dodge tent
DJ Shadow
DJ Shadow picked a particularly "bass"-heavy mix of genres & eras
the dance (sorry, EDM) tent...
...stayed pretty full the whole day
DJ Shadow from above
we did end up buying 1 beer...had to save $$ for the tolls, lol!
water was free, and actually sorta cold!
mud was only bad in certain spots, not all over, despite the off & on rainshowers
Gary Clark Jr. on the 2nd stage
Gary Clark Jr filling Chris Cornell's vacated slot...Gary had played the main stage on Saturday (only artist to play full sets both days)
the regular rules do not apply today, esp. the no alcohol or food part...
it's Jay-Z's festival, he can sell his clothing line if he wants to!
a better pic of the Washington statue
everything from the statue to the main stage was VIP only, so we couldn't get all that close, but we were still able to get a pretty good vantage point (video screens were big and sound was mostly good)
wandering back over to get a good spot for RUN-DMC, we were still able to see/hear Gary Clark Jr pretty well!
more Gary...
Clark...
Jr.!
Gary's new full-length album out later this year...
can't wait to hear it!
RUN-D.M.C. about to hit the stage for the 1st time in 10 yrs!
nice Alice in Chains shirt, D.M.C.!
Run seemed to be having fun & did most of the talking between songs...although my wife & I had to laugh at what once was super-cool B-boy fashion now looks like he's ready to hit the YMCA!
a couple songs in, Jay-Z (& apparently Beyonce) took in Run-D.M.C.'s set near the Washington statue in the middle of the VIP section, camera crew in tow (Ron Howard was enlisted to make a documentary about Made In America)
Run & D.M.C. let Jam Master Jay's 2 sons take over for a few minutes to show off their own DJ skills in a poignant tribute
back over to the dance tent as the countdown to Afrojack has begun...
Afrojack!
you can definitely see why this guy is so popular (though I'd never heard his music before Sunday)
definitely knows how to work a crowd!
he had an MC to hype the crowd into a frenzy
as if the visuals and beats didn't do the job already!
Afrojack sporting a..Mike Tyson shirt?
Exene of X
X rocks the Liberty stage
perfect backdrop for a true American original, X!
plenty of mugging for the cameras by Billy Zoom on guitar
DJ Bonebrake on the drums
see what I mean?
John Doe looking sharp as ever!
Pearl Jam time!
best part might've been "The Good The Bad & The Ugly" intro music!
all us old punks were feelin' lucky tonight, Clint!
nice Cult shirt, Jeff!
Matt Cameron getting in a few festival gigs w/ PJ this month before Soundgarden's new album comes out in Nov.!
pretty much says it all...
McCready!
once Evenflow started, we decided to move back for a little more space!
Jay-Z employed the "wings" effect during his set too (I watched it on YouTube!)
stand-up bass for "Daughter"
"Jeremy" bass
Ed kept the speechifying fairly brief: 1) vote; 2) be vigilant when the RIGHT to vote is made more difficult (see #1); 3) "we'd like to see more things 'Made In America!'"
The last verse of the Clash's "Know Your Rights"
Jay-Z comes out for a "99 Problems" encore!
video of Jay-Z + Pearl Jam!
g'nite Philadelphia!
