"Thanks for your comments. Yes, this is a very interesting thankga. Unfortunately the person I got it from knew nothing about it. The style reminds me of some Nepalese thankgas and I wonder if perhaps it is Newari as they sometimes have unusual iconography. But I could be completely wrong about it as I am no expert and haven't been able to find another thangka quite like it. It looks to be 19th century. So if you have any more suggestions, please feel free to let me know. With best wishes from Ireland."

"A closer look made me discover that it's mounted on a green dragon! And with the holding of a vessel filled with jewels -- this seems indicate this is a special form for the practice of increasing resources! Reminds me the white Jambhala on green dragon! which is also a manifestation of Avalokitesvara."

"Hi! This is an "unusual" Cundi! The form I see typically has the first pair of hands folded in heart (in a special mudra), and also has only one face -- while this one has three faces (central white, left blue and right yellow)! Can you provide more info about the source and place of the painting? Thanks,"

"Guru Rinpoche holds the vajra with the mudra (phyag-rgya in Tibetan, ‘hand gesture’) of great victory; it is called, ‘the suppressing, victorious mudra.’ It symbolizes victory over all negativities, all evil, all obstacles and defilements."

"Many thanks to Scott Shafsky for the above observations on this exquisitely painted thangka I found in the 1980s folded up to the size of a small envelope, tied with a ribbon in a small English Berkshire village near where I was born. Perhaps the appearance of such a rare and beautiful thangka so far from it's homeland without any obvious explanation was also a form of terma. I certainly feel a strong connection with Guru RInpoche and have visited the cave where he stayed at Tso pema in the Himalayas."
