Santa Rita Corozal
The modern town of Corozal sits mainly atop the ruins of an ancient Maya City. Most of the city was built with organic materials which have since decayed, but one ceremonial temple survived. The area was populated between 1200BC and 1500 AD when the Spaniards did their thing. When this temple was excavated in 1971 the remains of a male and female were found here, with a significant amount of jewelery. The temple has fallen on hard times, many stones pillaged to make roads in to the local cane fields, and even to build local houses. The view from the top of the temple, which sweeps from the Rio Hondo to the north to the New River to the south, supports the theory that those who lived here controlled the major supply routes to the inland areas of what is now Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala.
