This is one building I remember from my first visit to Warsaw. It's the Palace of Culture and Science, commissioned by Stalin as a gift from the Soviet People; it looks just like the "Seven Sisters" in Moscow. From the right angle or in the right light it can look imposing and sort of impressive - but closer up, it's really quite an ugly monstrosity.

Old Town
A friendly Dutch couple that I met on the train from Vilnius to Warsaw. They'd been hitchhiking in Scandanavia and then did a quick tour of the Baltics; they were stopping in Warsaw and Berlin on their way back to Holland. This custardy ice cream was DE-licious!

These cafes were a great place to enjoy an afternoon coffee.
Old Town was basically a pile of rubble at the end of WWII. It's been cafefully restored, and it's pretty amazing to compare the current buildings with photos of the city in ruins.
The Historical Museum of Warsaw is housed in three adjacent Old Town houes.
