My art works for sale

I have decided to sell off some of my artworks made during my spare times . It would be revivalist art which aims at bringing to life the lost traditions of Bengal . Combining elements of ancient bengali patachitra from Murshidabad and Bishnupur , Kalighat paintings , medieval Bengali wood sculptures and Pala manuscript illustrations . The prices have been kept quite affordable and reasonable for a start . Other paintings in the series that is coming soon are sodashi , ramchandra durbar , krishna leela and chaitanya leela . Woodecarvings of Bengal - a lost art

Bengal has always made up for its lack of good quality stone with other materials like terracotta and wood . However due to the perishable nature of these items , most have not survived the ravages of time . The ones that do survive strike amazement into our hearts and opens a door to a whole new undiscovered world of Bengali art ----------- The art form from pre british days containing essence of ancient Indian styles , indegenous styles and islamic influences . Pics used are mostly taken from a book on the subject , currently under Probal Roychowdhury's possesion .

Origins and evolution of Iconography of Kali

Kali is a mysterious deity of Hindu pantheon . For many she is the ultimate personification of love and motherhood , for others she is dreadful vulgar idol with sexual prowess ! Throughout ages people have been terrified of this black goddess and also loved her . Her impact is hard to ignore . This set of pictures tries to give a meaningful insight into the world of this black girl . How she was born , how nurtured and how she grew up into this lovely lady whom we all call ' maa ' .

Evolution of Durga murti in Bengal

None of the pictures in this album are my own . They are collected from various sources and show , in a step by step manner , the evolution of the iconography of Mahishasuramardini Durga . It includes a analysis into the origin of what is now know as horse-lion in Bengal . It starts with the ancient hindu era , continues through the islamic period and shows the different types of Durga idols that were popular in recent colonial times .

KALIGHAT PATACHITRA

Pataachitras are an ancient artform dating back to vedic era . It is an art traditionally practiced on cloths or patta-vastras . Even today it survives across cultures in various local forms -- like Bengal patas , Orissan patas and Gujrati Madhuvani etc . In 19th century the temple of Kalighat became an important pilgrimage center with the rapid expansion of Calcutta-British capital . The saga of Kalighat patas began was religious souvenirs which pilgrims purchased and took back home . They were made on cheap inexpensive papers using natural dyes and sold for a few annas . Kalighat pata is recognised by the use of single bold brush strokes and subtle shades . It utilises the backdrop of paper as one colour . Slowly at the turn of the century Kalighat patuas(artists) began drawing secular themes instead of religious ones . It became the first secular art of India and was a mirror to the world of 19th century Calcutta .With the advent of printing it went finally extinct in 1950s .

Temple architechture of Bengal

Stone was always in short in supply in the deltaic region of Bengal , Hence Bengali craftsmen had to resort to other sunstitutes to shelter their deities . The easiest and best alternative was baked clay or terracotta . And very soon Bengal would go ahead to produce the greatest masterpieces in clay work the wolrd has ever seen . Use of kiln baked clay bricks also meant that the structure could not be too big . The bengali artist solved the problem by creating their own distinct temple architecture . In this style the god's did not dwell on luxurious palaces . Instead they stayed on homes similar to common man's with thatched roofs and curvilenear arches . This architectural style would sonn capture the imaginations of other artists as far as south india and would wholly influence the mughal and rajput styles that were to be born later . Pictures here are mostly collected from internet and other personal sources .

My Durga puja -- Evolution

As a kid a I was fascinated by Durga and Durga puja . And i wanted my family to have its own Durga puja .Being a costly and laborious affair , the Idea seemed like a distant dream .My father started laughing whenever i used to request him to start a Durga puja . As a childs play i started drwaing pictures of Maa Durga and put her on cardboard pandals and worshipped her with flowers and incense sticks . Once i hit upon the idea to make a little clay deity .But the plan failed miserably when the deity began to crack while drying .Then i tried to make a clay diety using straw faremwork .But after tying the ten hands it looked like a Tarantula spider nailed on wax board .I gave up all hopes . Years later when i was in my closing years of school i tried to make a bigger clay deity once again.This time the result was more satisfactory. My enthusiastic school buddies came forth and contributed to the puja .Slowly amidst intense parental opposition mother arose .I named her Rajrajeshwari .
