Almost surreal view of the Alps from the train. The rain clouds are so dark, especially against the white.
Torre dei Lamberti from the main Piazza. I climbed up it eventually.
Verona used to be the Italian capital, so there's a mini Collesseum here.
Medieval walls surrounding the city are still intact.
Inside the Chiesa di San Fermo.
I decided to buy the city pass so I went in a bunch of things instead of merely observing from the outside. The weather demanded it--lots of rain.
Supposedly there was a lower church through those gates, but I missed it and didn't think too hard when I realized that the other visitor with me disappeared to somewhere.
Verona is the city where Romeo and Juliet takes place. There's a building that's said to be Juliet's house (it's not). Juliet, since when are you a pigeon peering down from your porch?
People leave love messages all over the walls in the walkway up to her house/
Torre di Lamberti up close.
Fountain in the other popular piazza, Piazza Ebre
Roman gate: Porta Borsari
Piazza Ebre is at the other end.
View from the Torre.
I love how my lense can make it seem like there is no grating on the peak hole.
Now you see it!
Oh, rain. Those really are the Alps, I promise.
Looking down on Piazza Ebre
Basilica di Santa Anastasia
El Duomo, under restoration.
Another view of the Torre.
A tomb outside the Basilica di Santa Anastasia, more of which I saw in Bologna.
Inside the Basilica
I climbed up a bunch of steps on the otherside of the river to get a drizzly view of Verona and the back of the Basilica
Il Duomo from afar
Basilica di Santa Anastasia again and the Torre is peaking out right behind.
You can see how close the river is to the city.
Not sure what this is, but it's on the other side of the river.
Descending the stairs on the hill and look what I found--me!
No we're inside Il Duomo.
I have never seen a clock inside a church and one so big and prominent, too. It's on the back wall, above the most sacred set of doors. Time is running out.
Inside the Arena/Colleseum.
Underneath. It really is like a sports stadium.
Main piazza again, Piazza Bra
My pass included a visit to this museum inside an old castle, Castlevecchio. Real drawbridge, but no water below.
Striped columns in the Chiesa di San Lorenzo. Just missed this by one street and had to doubleback to find it. Couldn't really see anything at all from the workers. Must be preparing for summer.
View from the bridge behind the Castlevecchio
Inside the museum
Basilica di San Zeno.
