Collesseum day one, right up the street from my B&B.
Instead of Where's Waldo, it's Where's the pigeon.
Arco de Tito at the entrance to the Forum
Ruins of the Forum with that same Arco de Tito in the background.
Looking out across the Forum. White building in the back under construction is the former Venice embassy building.
Palatino Hill on the left. I didn't get a chance to go inside. The Forum is all the stuff on the right still.
When those columns were a building, this church would've been mighty close to it.
There were piles of stone pieces scattered everywhere. I wonder if they just leave them there for looks now or if they are even 'real'
Lonely column.
Men on an Arco on the oterhside of the Forum.
Looking back out across the Forum from the otherside.
I can hardly imagine what this place would've looked like not as a ruin.
Statue on the stairs of Piazza del Campidoglio (desigend by Michelangelo) outside the Forum
The front of the former Venizian embassy building from before. Under contstruction, of course.
No traffic lights in the Piazza Venezia.
Street lights optional throughout Roma--for pedestrians, too.
Nothing special.
Fontaine de Trevi
Look, a person! No idea who she is but she was eating gelato and enjoying herself so I stalked her for a shot.
Plaza de Rotunda in front of the Pantheon.
The only source of light inside the Pantheon (originally)
It really is just a hole. Probably particularly important for the architectual prowess needed at the time to do this.
Wimpy organ. I can't imagine actually attending a service in here.
There were three 'layers' inside.
Directly beneath the opening there are drains for water when it rains.
Look at the reflection in the water--it's the opening!
Piazza della Minerva elephant statue by Bernini.
Santa Maria alla Minerva. Don't be fooled by the plain outside.
See, it's gorgeous. I liked this one a lot because of the 'surprise' element from the difference between the exterior and interior.
Even priests have to be fasionable. There was a street with all the latest robe/sash/clerical trends. See me faintly in the reflection?
Largo de Torre Argentina.
Yep. you're eyes are not being fooled. Those are indeed cats in the middle of a public square. They're protected by an animal rights agency and set off from the street with protective walls.
Closest one got to me. Most were down below on the grass but this one was brave.
Market in Campo de Fiori.
Smaller fountain in Piazza Navonna. The bigger ones were under restoration.
Sant'Agnese in Agone in Piazza Navonna--just passing by this one.
Castel Sant' Angelo on my way over to lunch with friends from high school near the Vatican.
Palms line the street leading up to St. Peter's.
Waiting in the plaza outside the Basilica de San Pietro in the Vatican. It will start to drizzle in 5 minutes, hence the dark sky.
No way I was going to wait in this line. I came back the next day instead.
I love these two pictures.
The river and the bridges reminded me a bit of Paris--probably because Paris was modeled after Roma!
Even buildings not worthy of being on the map/tourist guides are lovely.
Piazza del Popolo. Supposedly the ancient entrance to the city.
Looking down from the top of the “Spanish Steps” at the Trinita del Monti. Ran into my housemate here!
Just an ugly tunnel, but I thought it was kinda nice. Made a wrong turn to get to it, but it all worked out.
I was confused until I realized this was the back of Santa Maria Maggiore.
Now we're checking out the front.
Sunset means lighs on all the pretty buildings, like the Piazza de Republica.
Trevi at night. I got way lost trying to get here and then it wasn't that exciting after all that.
Collesseum by night.
I caught a star! See it?
Arco de Costantino. I really need to work on night photography...I could hardly take this shot.
View of the plaza from the steps of the Basilica inside the Vatican on Saturday when I decided to wait in line to visit.
Inside the Basilica. This place was not meant to be worshiped in, just for looks. No way is it functional.
There's a small service going on in the chapel straight back.
Picture obviously does no justice to this
No we're inside the vatican museum--aka a bunch of rooms that you race through with the masses to reach the Sixtine Chapel
It rotates! Pretty neat, I though.
Can you see me?
It's kinda like a zipper here. Bit of the building in the reflection.
Ceilings like this all through the museum
This is one pane of so many lining the ceilings.
Outside of it.
Santa Maria in Trastevere, known for the beautiful mosaics.
Mismatched columns taken from Roman buildings way back when.
Wouldn't be Italy without the PACE flags.
The Circus.
Arco d Costantino during the day and from the otherside. Just beyond it is the Collesseum.
Missed the last entrance by 10 minutes. The first of a streak of incidences like it in Italy.
First floor of San Clemente. Underneath are two floors of pagan temples and an archeological dig site where you can hear and see the water from the river running.
What a candle stick.
San Giovanni in Laternao--stumbled in at the end of a service. It's the Pope's church.
Outside San Giovanni.
