Spring came a month early --- 6C when we started, little snow left, a lot of melt and rain had taken their effect. As we walked higher the snow was still patchy but we could at least ski. For about 2 hours the sun appeared and it was a perfect spring day, then it got cloudy, then snowed, and finally rained.

2 Countries 1 Forest (2C1F), NorthTroy, Vt.

2 Countries 1 Forest: Green Mtn./Sutton Trail A collaboration of the Northeast Wilderness Trust, Vermont Sierra Club & the Québec Sierra Club --- The purpose of this outing is to view several large blocks of conserved land on both sides of the Vermont-Quebec border. This area has been termed the "Northern Green Mountains -- Sutton Range" corridor. 2C1F advocates conservation of large core natural areas, linked by connecting corridors which allow for wildlife and plant migration. The Northern Greens-Sutton corridor is one of 2C1F's five priority areas for conservation.

A 46-day, 712 km. expedition along the full length of the Romaine River which is about to be squeezed dry by the construction of 4 massive dams by Hydro Québec. Organized by Nic Boisclair, Alexis de Gheldere, Fran Bristow, & Steve Leckman, among its objectives is to sensitize public opinion to the continuing slow but sure destruction and contamination of Québec's most stunning and powerful rivers by hydro-electric dams. Complexe Environmental de St.-Michel (CESM) (biogas and recycling plants), Montréal, Qc.

Site web: www.tohu.ca Located in the geographical center of the island of Montréal, this former stone quarry was converted into a municipal garbage dump in1965. Given the era, all human waste, including toxics, was dumped there and has to be carefully monitored to ensure that the water table is not being impacted by the heavy metals, paints, etc. The dump was recently closed and now the 1000's of tonnes of garbage over a depth of 22 floors is decomposing and generating much methane which is collected to generate electricity instead of being allowed to evaporate and augment the greenhouse gas problem. Eventually, the former dump will become on of Montreal's largest parks with a small lake and other public facilities. The site also houses Montréal's major recycling plant.

Beautiful, warm day, refreshing breeze on top. We lucked out: no bugs, no rain, although they've had an unusually high amount of rain this summer. The Lamoille, which we passed, looks like it's in flood --- high, muddy, and fast-flowing, with riverside tree branches skimming the high water --- at the end of July.

Fromagerie biologique 'Au gré des champs', St. Athanase, Qc.

This 70 hectare organic dairy/cheese farm grows its own feed grains using techniques such as a 7-year cycle of crop rotation, composting of farm-produced wastes, natural manures and minerals to replenish the earth, etc. The cheeses are also produced on site from raw milk produced by the farm's herd. The owner, Daniel Gosselin, demonstrates smart agriculture working with nature to produce cheeses of the highest quality that are both pesticide and hormone-free.
