Istanbul and Cappadocia
Turkey really felt like a foreign country. Few people mistook me for a local. People called out to me as I passed and asked me where I was from. Coincidently, they had a cousin in California, and by the way, would I like to buy a rug? At the hostel, there were signs above the sink that said the water was not safe to drink. If the water wasn't clean, how could anything be clean? What was the point of washing my hands if the water wasn't clean? I only drank and brushed my teeth with bottled water, but I wasn't as careful with the food. I think I ate some lettuce that wasn't washed properly. Anyway, I had stomach problems for several days. In central Turkey I encountered squat toilets with no toilet paper. As an American, it was a bit of a shock. Although I enjoyed seeing the sights in Turkey, I was glad to return to California.
