John Dillard Collins (1823-1881) and family
John Dillard Collins, a doctor in Kentucky, became a surgeon in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He and his wife Elvira Hatchett had three daughters, Leila, Jessie and Rosalie, who made a trek south from Kentucky at the outset of the Civil War, eventually ending up in Keatchie, Louisianna. John Dillard Collins was paroled in September 1865 and travelled back to Kentucky with his family. Also accompanying the family was a doctor from Shreveport, LA , Samuel Kirkwhite Furman, and his son Williams Barnard Furman, who later married Jessie Collins, two of my great-grandparents. Samuel Kirkwhite Furman was grandson of Richard Furman (1755-1825), an eminent Southern Baptist preacher and founder of Furman University, Greenville, SC.
