Steptoe Butte

A state park in Washington. The butte is the old granite stump of a mountain that protrudes 1000 feet above the surrounding countryside. Vistas from the butte include hills of the Palouse district of eastern Washington, formed of aeolian deposits of volcanic ash following explosive vulcanism a la Mount Saint Helens in 1980. The people are Yang and her friends Bai Lijun and Gong Jiang, from Spokane. Lijun is a good amateur photographer who took the seven better photos at the end of the collection.

Yang Xu Painting Exhibition at WSU

An exhibition of ink paintings by Yang Xu is being held from September 22 to October 14 in the CUB Gallery of the Student Union at WSU in Pullman. This album contains photos taken in the CUB Gallery, including at an opening reception on September 27. The exhibition is being sponsored by the Department of Foreign Languages and Cultures and by the Student Entertainment Board. Yang Xu will give a live demonstration of her painting technique in the Honors College Lounge on Wednesday, October 12, 5-7 pm. She will explain the characteristics of Song Dynasty painting style.

Titan II Missile Site, Sahuarita, AZ

A blast into Dr. Strangelove's land of "Mutual Assured Destruction" (MAD), this small museum in southern Arizona houses the only remaining Titan II Missile Silo. The tours include recitations of the brief times needed to send off the ICBM's, rocket thrusts, megatonnages, and fail-safe mechanisms to "guarantee" that only the President of the US could issue the commands to fire off the missiles. Titan II's were in use from about 1962 until 1984, when they were succeeded by rockets with MIRV's (multiple independently retargetable vehicles), meaning ~10 warheads to a missile instead of just one.

Faugères, Languedoc

The small wine district Faugères AOC hosts an all-village celebration each year on the second Sunday in July. Between 10 am and 8 pm there is wine-tasting along the small streets as well as sales of handicrafts and fruits and vegetables. There is a parade of members of various "confreries" (brotherhood associations) and a ceremony in which new members are indicted into the Faugères Confrerie. At dusk, a communal dinner is served, this year to the music of an excellent swing band. Also shown are views of an old castle in the village of Cabrerolles, and, back in Brussels on the way home, of Grand Place. Includes also photos by my friend Yang.

Peace Corps 50th Anniversary Dinner, March 1, 2011

The Peace Corps Act was signed into law by President Kennedy on March 1, 1961. To date, about 200,000 Americans have served as volunteers in the Corps. Their experiences have directly and indirectly led to a much improved understanding of the problems and aspirations of the many peoples of the world. On March 1, nearly 800 dinners were held across the nation to celebrate the occasion. Here are a few views of the dinner held in Moscow in he 1912 Building by the "RPCV of the Palouse" group. Bill Chipman Palouse Trail

Established by the Pullman Civic Trust, the Bill Chipman Palouse Trail is a wonderful trail for bicycling, walking, rollerblading, and all sorts of non-motorized travel between Pullman and Moscow along an abandoned railroad right-of-way. See http://www.pullmancivictrust.org/Chipman.html for more info. These photos were taken on a hot day, August 15, 2010, when I rode from Pullman to Moscow and back along the trail. The trail is part of a trail system that extends beyond Moscow through Troy and all the way to Juliaetta. See http://maps.goggle.com/biking.

Johnson Parade, July 4, 2010

Johnson, Washington, a small village 10 miles south of Pullman, hosts a zany July 4th parade every year, starting at 10:00 am. The Parade is pure Americana. There is little organization. Anyone can march in the parade. It is hard to distinguish the participants from the spectators, and many attendees are both. Old cars, impromptu music bands, cars promoting candidates for political office. Jr. Misses, groups of people on small motorbikes. This year I attended with a friend, Yang. There was a group of kids with water pistols; also two trucks with "water cannons" who "duked it out". A real gas. See also an album of photos from an earlier parade in 2004.

Kamiak Butte Wildflowers in May

A month of cold and rain, followed by four days of sun led to verdant vegetation and a large number of wildflowers seen on a walk on Kamiak Butte with visiting Matt Zacate. Wildflowers seen include Lady's Slipper Orchid, Trillium and Indian Paintbrush.

Port Republic Sketchbook 1887, D.C. Newman Collins

Mostly scenes of Port Republic, on the coast of New Jersey, with a few of Haddonfield, near Camden. Newman Collins grew up in Haddonfield but vacationed throughout his youth in Port Republic, where his grandfather, Captain John Collins, and many aunts, uncles and cousins lived. John Collins's grandfather, Dr. Richard Collins, emigrated from Northern Ireland to the US in about 1750 and settled in Port Republic. These sketches flesh out a marvelous journal that Newman wrote during vacations at Port Republic between 1887 and 1890 that is being transcribed. Art of Daniel Charles Newman Collins (1865-1953)

Paintings and folk art of my grandfather, Newman Collins. He grew up by the sea, built and then raced sailboats and motorboats. Professionally, he was an architect and civil engineer specializing in steel-framed industrial buildings in about 1895-1920. Many paintings are shown, as well as folk-art items he made. Dan's 2009 summer research experience and REU poster, July 2009

The National Science Foundation funds summer programs across the US to give undergraduate science students a taste of the excitment of carrying out research. It is the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. This summer, WSU hosted about ten independent REU summer schools, with a total of about 100 students. Daniel was enrolled in the Chemistry REU school at WSU, organized by Professor Jim Brozik in Chemistry. He carried out research in summer 2009 in the group of Prof. Xian. Photos here are from an REU poster exposition held on July 31.

Allenbach, Hunsrück District, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany

Allenbach is the place of origin of my great-great-grandfather, Johann Friedrich Müller, his wife Carolina Theis, and their two children, who emigrated to the US in 1854. Images include the historic reformation Pfarrkirche, a few scenes of the town, beautiful natural surroundings in the Hunsrück district, and of the graveyard. I am indebted to Thomas and Viola Wichert who took me on this visit to Allenbach. Images of the family travel document from 1854 are included, issued at Trier, Kingdom of Prussia. The document shows that they entered France at Forbach, close to Saarbrücken, with permission to travel to Le Havre, where they boarded the ship Annapolis for New York City.

We met with Peg's sister Caryn Webb and Don Brant, toured the Doris Duke Estate in north central New Jersey, stopped by Cranford, New Jersey, where Gary grew up, and then met with Elizabeth Elson and her son Travis in Manhattan at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Togo, Baguida, CC-Baguida, drawings of proverbs by art students

As a Peace Corps teacher at the Cour Complimentaire Baguida in 1967-68, I taught 'dessin' in addition to math, science and solfege in seventh through tenth grades. At the end of the year, I gave my students an assignment to design a two-page document with proverbs in their local language on the right-hand side and in french on the left. They were asked to be artistically creative in whatever way they chose. Included here are a few out of about 50 wonderful products.

Peace Corps 1967, Togo, Kusuntu School Building Project

During the summer of 1967, I worked with five other Peace Corps volunteers, Betsy Hackenburg, Doug Puckett, Janet Blake, Betsy Warner, and Dana Sutton on a project to build an elementary school in Kusuntu, a small village several miles north of Palime, a regional center in the mountains of southwestern Togo. Dana organized the project and obtained funding from in the US. We had to cajole villagers to do the hard work of digging sand, making bricks and generally building the school from scratch. We were assisted by a few skilled builders from the village. The photos include a few scenes from the village and many from a formal celebration at the inauguration of the school, complete with speeches from the Assistant Peace Corps Director, from Dana, and local dignitairies. Also dances by young girls from the village

Peace Corps 1968, Togo, Baguida, Cours Complementaire Baguida

In my second year in Togo, I taught at the Cours Complementaire Baguida, a 7th-10th grade school in a small village about a mile from the coast in the coconut plantations. I taught mostly maths and sciences (physics/chemistry and biology), but also a little drawing and music. Shown are scenes at the start of a typical school day, with students lining up, followed by scenes from graduation day ca May 1968.
