Old-growth forest destruction by the Finnish State in Talluskotavaara, Savukoski. State-owned forest company Metsähallitus is clear-cutting one of the largest remaining intact forest areas in Fennoscandia. Kieltanpalo, Painopää logging dec 2006

Logging in a virgin forest by Metsähallitus in 2006. This dry, low-productive forest area had been burned heavily a long time ago and as a result, the forest mainly consisted of 100-200 years old "young" pines, birches and aspens. This kind of younger virgin forests are rare and should be prioritized in protection planning. In reality they are being clearcut systematically by Metsähallitus. All photos © Olli Manninen

There are about 4000 hectares of unprotected forests, mostly completely untouched by forestry. Forests at Kuopsuvaarat and Kuolavaarat are now protected by the wilderness area law. Moukavaara, Salla

Moukavaara area is situated in Northern Salla municipality. It is a 10000 hectare area between Joutsitunturi nature reserve and Tuntsa wilderness area. About 3000 hectares are classified as productive forest land. Spruce domitated virgin forests reach 20 kilometres from Pimiäselkä in the south to Juntterivaara in the north.
