It is absolutely overwhelming as you drive around for miles & miles and see this stuff. 80% of New Orleans was under water up to 15 feet high for several weeks. Nearly 1,500 people died. The American Red Cross estimates that more than 350,000 homes were destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, while an additional 146,000 had major damage. Overall, 850,791 housing units were damaged, destroyed or left inaccessible because of Katrina. This is the largest disaster in US history yet the outbreak of the Iraq war has taken media coverage off this ongoing disaster recovery effort in the neighboring state of Louisiana. More photos here:
