We arrived Wednesday morning
Trying to catch the official “Welcome to Rhode Island” sign :)
First Stop: Spike's Junkyard Dogs for lunch
They had a sink to wash your hands in the middle of the restaurant.
My Texas Ranger Dog: bbq sauce, bacon, and cheddar cheese. Yummy!
We all shared this moonpie for dessert. :)
We heard these milkshakes were “awfully good”.
Sipping on my oreo shake.
We spent Wednesday driving through the countryside of Connecticut and Rhode Island
A old Connecticut whaling village
Galilee, Rhode Island
This building was the Chamber of Commerce building in Naragansett, Rhode Island
When we arrived at our house the sun was getting low in the sky
The house where we stayed
Upon arrival at our home in Carnegie Heights we took the golf carts out for a spin on the grounds and around the golf course.
On our adventure we found an old family homestead and family cemetery with gravestones more than 200 years old.
The golf course clubhouse
The sun setting on our first day in New England
That night we went to the Lobster Pot for dinner so Derek could try his first lobster
Digging in...
He likes it! :)
He ordered it broiled with bread crumbs on top
Thursday morning we drove to Point Judith to catch the ferry to Block Island off the coast of Rhode Island
With my dad on board the ferry
The shores of Block Island
Pulling in to Old Harbor
We ate our sack lunches before renting our mopeds
We spent two hours exploring the island by moped.
Unfortunately Derek left his wallet back at the house, so he had to ride along on the back of my moped. He was bummed. :(
The lighthouse on the south end of the island
Derek seems to always find a rock to climb wherever we go. :)
Derek making the most of his ride along...
give him the camera and selfies are bound to happen...
I didn't realize he was taking so many...
the end of the selfies :)
A view from the moped
an old church on Block Island
The lighthouse on the north end of the island
Thursday night we visited Beechwood mansion on Bellvue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island for their murder mystery tour.
They had actors in costumes act out a party and a murder. Then they sent us through the house to find clues and interrogate the suspects. My dad solved the mystery and guessed the correct murderer! We all thoroughly enjoyed this! :)
Friday we drove into Massachusetts with a first stop in Sandwich, MA on Cape Cod. We didn't take any pictures in Sandwich. :(
Plymouth Rock where the pilgrims first landed
Derek and my mom checking out the rock along with a swarm of students on a field trip. :)
The monument where Plymouth Rock is displayed
This is a replica of the Mayflower in the harbor
We stopped on the side of the road to see the cranberry bogs. This one had already been harvested.
Cranberries growing in the bog
Now on to Boston...
We walked the 2.5 mile Freedom Trail to see all of the important historical stops in the city.
There were mums everywhere! Here we are in the Boston Commons
In front of the statehouse
The church in the background played hymns from its belltower :)
Benjamin Franklin on the site of the first public school in America
Faneuil Hall / Quincy Market and Samuel Adams
The oldest tavern in America
Outside Paul Revere's house where he lived during his Midnight Ride
Paul Revere with the steeple in the background where he saw the signal that the British were coming
One of the quaint streets of Boston
The public garden across the street from Boston Commons
We saw an innumberable amount of Dunkin' Donut Shops in Boston, so we had to try some for ourselves at the end of our Freedom Trail walk
We ended up in Concord and Lexington after dark and saw where the first shot of the Revolutionary War was fired
Saturday morning: pumpkin pancake breakfast! My mom actually made them, I just helped with the flipping. :)
On Saturday we drove back in to Newport
We walked the cliffwalk where all the huge mansions can be found.
These were the “summer cottages” of the New York wealthy at the turn of the 20th century
The backside view of the Beechwood mansion where we had visited on Thursday night for the murder mystery tour
Along the cliff walk
“The Breakers” belonged to the Vanderbilt family and cost 11 million dollars to build in the late 1800's
My dad and Derek found a secret tunnel through the bushes at “The Breakers”
Some of the cliff walk got rocky
At the end of the cliffwalk we turned in toward town and walked back along Bellevue Avenue to see the front of the mansions
The entrance to Beechwood Mansion
Saturday night we drove in to Providence, RI. Here we are at Brown University by the only sign we could find along the street.
The First Baptist Church in America is right in downtown Providence
Interesting sermon title, but it was still cool to see the church and say we have been there. :)
A front view of the steeple
The state capitol building in Providence.
We did a lot of “drive-by” photos here because the streets were jampacked with cars due to the three events happening in the city that night.
After a yummy dinner in Little Italy we traveled to the Providence Zoo for their carved pumpkin display. There were over 1000 carved pumpkins!
Where the Wild Things Are!
Sunday morning we awoke to sunshine, so we took the golf carts out for one more stroll around the grounds.
Following my mom and dad. The paths were made of broken shells...very cool. :)
The leaves were just beginning to change, but here was one beautiful red one.
Here we are in our “cart”
A view of the water by the house where we stayed.
This was our first trip with only my parents. We had a great time and wish it had been longer. We are looking forward to many more trips with them in the future. :)
