Mancamp Day 2 - Laurel Highlands

Mancamp, Day 2. About 15 of us started, then huge storm and only 5 of us remained (Darius, Joe, DKeg, Karl and me). Spectacular trails with terrific TTFs. Rocky, rooty, gnarly East Coast singletrack. Hot, humid, stormy and under heavy rain for about 1 hour.

Fun, cool ride, nice weather. South trails first via Stony Trail, then Dark Hollow, Barrel Bay, Allegheny, Shade then Stony Trail back to the northern trails: Buck, Doe, Sleek Dog, Eagle, Hydro, Osprey, Sidewinder, Loco Motive, Ridge, Ray's Revenge, Berry Patch, Ridge the other way, Grippis, Alle and Buck back to the parking lot. With Yueq, Dan, Ronald, Butch, Maureen, Bob and Jason.

2011 SM100

10:11 finish, good for 7th in Masters. Brutal heat and wet rocks slowed me down considerably on the singletrack uphill and downhill. Felt pretty good otherwise, no crash, no cramp.

Tour Divide - Day 24 - Elkford, BC to Banff, AB

Left at 5:30am. Rode all day like Craig was on my ass (he wasn't). Saw 3 bears/grizzlies and a wolf. Climb up Elk Pass was very steep. Rained after Elk Pass. Ride along the Spray Lakes was very bumpy. Lots of rough trails there. Finished around 5:45pm. Was greeted by Jason of Soul Cycles with a PBR. What a ride!

Tour Divide - Day 23 - Eureka, MT to Elkford, BC

Huge day, caught up with Craig just before Elkford. Felt very good and strong all day. Could have continued past Elkford but decided not to due to grizzlies and wanted to stay in view of Craig (didn't want him to sneak in front of me during the night.) Stayed at the camping in Elkford.

Long day. Tough finish in climbing, muddy conditions. Arrived at B&B after hours but rooms were open. Got a late pizza at the local bar. Swan Lake was about 5 miles off road.

Thunderstorm on the way up to Helena. Greeted by a Velonews supporter in Helena, MT. Arrived late in Lincoln, WY, but a motel and a restaurant were open. Good, long day. Made up the time lost the day before on Craig.

Tour Divide - Day 19 - Wise River, MT to Butte, MT

Difficult day. Broke 2 nipples on my way to Fleecer Ridge. Fleecer Ridge was very tough (38% grade). Descended cautiously because of the broken spokes. Then another huge climb before Butte. Stopped at Rob Leipheimer's shop in Butte to fix the nipples. Had problems loading the SoBo (now NoBo authorized) detours into GPS. Then GPS failed. Lost half a day and had to stay in Butte for the night. Lost about 30 miles on Craig.

Day included the horrible 40-mile Idaho rail trail (very sandy, flat, straight for 40 miles, boring, washboarded, pure torture). Then a difficult part in beautiful Montana. Mosquitoes everywhere. Arrived in Lima around 11p.

Tour Divide - Day 13 - Steamboat, CO to Medicine Bow Nat'l Forest, WY

Day included a 3-hour, 6-mile hike in 3-foot deep soft snow. Stopped at Brush Mountain Lodge and saw Bob Anderson. Also got caught up at the lodge by Greg the stealth rider, but he decided to stay overnight so passed him right back. Good, strong day overall.

Tour Divide - Day 12 - Kremmling, CO to Steamboat, CO

Had a decent day, if a little short. Climb after Radium was very steep. Debated doing another 20 miles after Steamboat but opted to stop there. Trail closures at a creek near Lynx Pass and on the bike trail in Steamboat (flooded).

Tour Divide - Day 11 - Frisco, CO to Kremmling, CO

Woke up at 5am to cold rain, then half an hour later when I got ready to ride there was an inch of snow on the ground and it was falling. Heard from Roland that he was going to take the day off. Decided to ride to Silverthorne and assess the situation there. Bought winter liners and started riding from Silverthorne around 2. Roland stayed in Frisco so passed him that day.

Included Boreas Pass at 11,500 ft. Cold rain on the way down got me real cold. Was shivering and had to stop in Frisco (goal was Silverthorne). Met SoBo leaders Kurt and Jefe on the way down Boreas.

The day included the huge Marshall Pass at almost 11,000 ft. Arrived in Salida in the middle of a huge festival and had trouble finding a room. Ate huge dinner at Mexican restaurant. Caught up on Ross Delaplane.

Tour Divide - Day 8 - Platoro, CO to bottom of Cochetopa Pass, CO

Good day with a new shifter. Had to spend 3 hours with Gary in Del Norte to fix but left in much better shape. Climbing to Indiana Pass in the morning still on the 3X1 was tough (Now stuck with a 16t in the rear). Fabulous descent from there into Del Norte.

Tour Divide - Day 7 - Brazos Ridge, NM to Platoro, NM

Probably my toughest day. Very tired from the 3X1 riding. Stopped early in Platoro instead of going on to Indiana Pass. Very windy in the last 20 miles to Platoro. Took a cabin there and arranged for an off-route bike shop to deliver a shifter in Del Norte the next day. Got passed by Roland and Ross. Low mileage day, but good decision allowing me to solve my shifter problem.

Very tough day with lots of climbing on just a 3X1. Camped at the top of Brazos (nearly 11,000 ft) right before a snow drift. Cold night. Beautiful mountains everywhere.

Tough, hot day. Broke my rear shifter shortly after Cuba and had to start riding 3X1 (20t rear). Slept in a dorm room at El Rito Community College. Both Pete and Craig went past El Rito.

Hot but fairly easy day. Rode with Pete on and off most of the day. Had to deal with some smoke from the New Mexico fires for the last 40 miles. Couldn't see the sun. Broke rear rack. Bought a new one at the Walmart in Grants. Slept in motel in Grants.

MoCo Epic 100K+

Very cool, very long ride throughout MoCo. Perfect weather. 5 of us (Gary, Bayar, Super Dylan, Snappster and me) did the whole thing (70 miles.) Super Dylan actually started from VA, adding about 25 miles (40k). Started from the C&O, took the goat trail to enter Schaeffer, then rode the white and the orange trails. Picked up 5 people including Chris Scott at Schaeffer, then Claude the unicyclist (on 2 wheels this time) on Hoyles Mill. Did all 3 loops at Little Bennett, did the Clopper Lake loop including the bonus loop, some extra mileage in the Kentlands, then the super flowy Muddy Branch trail to the C&O where we arrived at dark. The late sunset combined with the moonlight over the Potomac was pretty cool. With Super-Dylan, Gary, Bayar, Snappster, Michael, Chris Scott, Claude, Ed, Dan, Misty and Dave G.

RickyD's fixie ride at Schaeffer

Slapped a 20-t tomicog on the Rig and rode fixie for the first time ever. In a tutu! At Schaeffer! Had some trouble with starting, stopping, downhills, uphills, roots, logs, smooth trail, slowing, accelerating... Other than that, it went very well. Lots of fun. Shuttled to Gambrill from Reservoir. Yellow, Lawnmower, Blue, Rusted Bug, Busted Knuckles, Little Canaan, Enchanted Forest, Blue again to Crystal Pond and the eroded climb to Sand Flats, Skink, Viper, Pit and GPR back to the Reservoir. MORE ride. With Chris G, Tom, Ryan, Marco, Butch, Phu and Dr. Phil. Beautiful weather and trails in great shape.
