the largest trees i've ever seen. just ridiculous.
lava tubes that form as the lava stops flowing underground
At the black sand beach in kalapana people toss coconuts into the lava field to rebuild the area and they've started taking root. The sprout right from the coconut at the same time they try putting down roots, so you can pick the small ones up before they've found purchase in the ground. nifty.
Kalapana was buried by lava in the 90s. Some have chosen to rebuild right on the lava fields, which makes for a desolate backyard, yet pretty crazy looking.
Lava hits the ocean
the crowd gets pretty huge, but eventually thins out
Akaka Falls, a few minutes away.
The windward side of the island is much rougher, with few sand beaches.
Tidal pools form an amazing 'beach' area where you can swim, snorkel and chill out. Very 'local'...the tourists don't make it here.
A quick swim to your own little island.
The last beach we hit. Swam with a sea turtle, who seemed not to care a bit about me.
One last breakfast. Stuffed french toast.
