The Drakensberg Mountainous range, stretching across Moditlo Estate & Private Game Reserve, as observed from the shuttle Discovery in April 1993. Geologically, the Drakensberg is a remnant of the original African plateau. The mountains are capped by a layer of basalt up to 1,500 metres thick, with sandstone lower down, resulting in a combination of steep-sided blocks and pinnacles. Caves are frequent in the sandstone, and many have rock paintings by the Bushmen. Snow falls regularly in the winter, while rains and mists can occur all year-round.
Moditlo Estate & Private Game Reserve consists of 3 farms, namely Moria, Hoedspruit and Riversdale. You can clearly see the Mbezi and Moditlo seasonal rivers from the picture above. These rivers provide Moditlo with the best base of vegetation in the area.
Aerial footage of Moditlo Estate & Private Game Reserve from 9,000 feet. In addition to the various spectacular private Stands (land) that is on offer to potential buyers, Carousels (circular patterns) were further designed with the specific intention to encourage Game to roam freely through the properties to the naturally designed watering holes, situated in the centre.
Moditlo stretches from the wing on the left towards the spectacular Drakensburg mountains in the background. The Moditlo and Mbezi seasonal rivers flow throughout the private Reserve.
Taken in the winter time, the famous noticeable Lion's Head (to the left of the picture) can still be seen through the hazey background of the Drakensberg Mountains.

The Tree in the foreground is the Lead Wood Tree which is a protected species in South Africa. This semi-deciduous tree can grow up to 20 metres. They flower from November to March with a creamy yellow spike and bear fruit from February to August. Giraffes and Elephants feed on them. They are thought to live for approximately 2,000 years and remain standing for at least the same length of time once they die.

The front drive to a private property on Moditlo. This particular property was selected by a tree lover.
A fine example of the back view of a private home on Moditlo. This is based upon the traditional Rondavel design, which is very popular is South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland and Lesotho. Historically the Rondavel was built from materials that could be locally obtained in raw form. The mortar may consist of sand, soil, or some combinations of these mixed with dung. The floor is finished with a processed dung mixture to make it smooth. The roof braces of a rondavel are made out of tree limbs, which have been harvested and cut to length. The roof itself is made out of thatch that is sewn to the wooden braces with rope made out of grass. The designs for our units will bear a contemporary twist to this most traditional design. Separating it from the rest of the game reserves and ensuring ours is truly unique. Examples of the architects impressions can be found in this album.
Another completed property on Moditlo with a wonderful Veranda.
1,000,0000 litre water reservoir on Moditlo Estate & Private Game Reserve. Unlike other Reserves situated in Hoedspruit Town, Moditlo has its own privately mananged source of water.
Sub station on the Reserve. Electricity is transferred to this sub station direct from the main ESCOM grid. From here, it is channelled across through a network of trenches, separate to that of water trenches. All infrastructure is cleverly designed underground, thereby not disrupting nature and wildlife. Approximately EUR 20 million was spent on this infrastructure over the past 5 years. This first world system sets new standards for Private Game Reserves in South Africa. It is designed to provide a 5 star + quality of service.
