A superb day in one of Cumbria's gems. An early start saw me up and down Hallin Fell by 8.20am and a steep direct up Steel Knotts, a greasy and slippery path was OK going up, descending steeply by a wall I went up Howe Grain valley to pick up the path up to Beda Fell. A long gradual and occasionally boggy ascent to the fine summit was enjoyed before I progressed to Boredale Hause and the wonderful valley path back to Martindale New Church car park. I found a herd of red deer on my way back, it just topped a great day of about 9.5 miles of walking and 2900ft of ascent and descent.

Esk Pike and Bowfell, Angie completes the 214 Wainwright fells!

I met up with Jill and David Rowland and Angie and David Espin at the Old Dungeon Ghyll, Great Langdale, for a walk that would see Angie complete her round of the 214 Wainwright fells. We headed up Mickleden and Rossett Gill past Angle Tarn and up to Esk Hause before summitting Esk Pike (213). Picking our way across the rocky top we then found our way through some clinging cloud to the summit of Bowfell and the celebrations could begin!!! A superb day on the fells and many congratulations to Angie, and thanks to all the group for their company.

Meugher 20.8.11

Walking with friend and fellow OFC member Simon Howard, we parked at Conistone near Skipton and made our way up the Dib and the track of Bycliffe Road to Mossdale and then Sandy Gate. No paths exist to the summit of Meugher so we guessed our way through the bogs and swamps and eventually found drier ground near the 575m summit, a good break enjoying the views and then a descent towards the lead mines above Grassington and nervy passage through some grouse shooting moor! Pleasant field paths led us back to our start point. A great walk and some beautiful sunshine, plenty of banter during the 14 miles made for a superb day, cheers Simon.

Blea Rigg, Silver How and Loughrigg Fell - Richard's 214

To reach the summit of each of the 214 fells so beautifully detailed in A. Wainwright's guide books is a worthy achievment. I was happy to be able to witness friend and fellow OFC member Richard Ratcliffe complete the task on Saturday 18th June 2011. Detaching from myself from the main party at Stickle Tarn I did a little fell wandering and wildlife spotting before meeting up with Simon Howard on Loughrigg Fell to welcome the group and Richard as they approached the top.

Mardale Head to Kidsty Pike then Rampsgill Head, High Street, Thornthwaite Crag, Gray Crag, back to Thornthwaite Crag and finally Mardale Ill Bell before a descent down Nan Bield Pass, one small shower of rain did not dampen my spirits a great day!

Ilkley Moor circular

A 19 mile walk with Richard Ratcliffe. We headed up Brown Bank Lane out of Silsden and took the path up Nab End, traversing the high path on Ilkley Moor we took lunch at the Cow and Calf rocks. Crossing the moor towards Keighley we then had a tarmac march before a woodland path through Low Moor and High Moor Woods led us to Black Pots Farm, descending on field paths we accompanied Holden Beck down through Ghyll Grange and finally the canal towpath back to Silsden. The weather improved throughout the day, the company and the crack was excellent, last and not least, thanks to Josie - the two short lifts in the car at either end of the walk saved the legs from being even stiffer!!!

Met up with Richard Ratcliffe for a drive to Eskdale and walk from Wha House with David and Jennifer Hall, we summited Green Crag, Harter Fell and Hardknott Fell and returned to the cars via Lincove Beck, what a superb day out!

Hopegill Head & Grisedale Pike 15.04.2011

A meet with good mate and fellow OFC member Simon Howard, we met in Braithwaite walked up Coledale Beck and up to the Hause, ascended to Sand Hill and Hopegill Head then across to Grisedale Pike. Very little in the way of views and joint map and compass skills and Simon's GPS came in useful occasionally in the murk on the tops. The perversity of British weather showed its face as the skies cleared a lot as we descended. Still a great day for me and Josie though, thanks so much for your company Simon:-))

Accompanying, with others, Neil Haslewood on his 214th Wainright fell top Steeple above Ennerdale. We first took in the tops of Caw Fell, Haycock and Scoat Fell. A good meal in fine company at the Kirkstile Inn in Loweswater followed, congratulations to Neil, a well organized and fun day!

Glaramara and Rosthwaite Fell, Bessyboot if you prefer!

Wednesday, and we meet up with Ann and Roger, Jo and John, for a steep brilliant walk up to Glaramara. A hail shower at the top cut short the summit views, we proceeded on to Rosthwaite Cam, at which point John had to leave us. Bessyboot was also summitted before a steep descent back to the cars at Mountain View and some welcome refreshments at the Scafell Hotel at Rosthwaite. A great day, thanks to all our companions.

Yorkshire 3 Peaks

A lenghty walk approximately 24 miles, taking in the summits of Pen Y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. Good friend and fellow OFC member Simon Howard, joined me on this walk organised by my local pub to raise funds for Guide Dogs for the blind. Early rain gave way to some sunshine later, deep bogs were encountered and we finished in 11 hours 20 minutes. Many thanks to Simon his company was vital as I struggled late on in the walk.

Four Far Eastern Fells with Richard Ratcliffe

Walking from the beautiful valley of Swindale, a circuit of Selside Pike, Branstree, Tarn Crag and Grey Crag. A return down the valley and the splendour of Forces Falls. Very wet and windy for the most part of the walk, fine sunshine and blue skies to finish with. Many thanks to Richard for driving, and not least for his company on a grand day out.

Seven Far Eastern Fells with Angie

We met up with Angie Espin, plus Bailey and Harry and Bethan, to do a little summit seeking in the Far Eastern Fells. Starting from Hartsop we ascended Brock Crags, The Nab, Rest Dodd, Rampsgill Head, High Raise, Kidsty Pike and finally The Knott before our weary legs carried us back to Hartsop and a welcome cup of tea! A long day but spent in lovely and enjoyable company, laughter kept us going when we were tired.
