Pinnacles Hike near Kibler Valley

John and I set out to find the Great Falls of the Dan River near Kibler Valley - an incredible section of class II water on the Dan River that we both love paddling.

La Fortuna

A beautiful mountain town in Costa Rica that lies just below the Volcan Arenal. High humidity and rain made it very steamy and clouds obscured the volcano most of the time. But, we were rewarded with beautiful views and creative towels and lots of wildlife!

Cordoba

Cordoba followed Madrid. A beautiful, ancient town with narrow, winding streets where you could lose yourself for hours. A world religion course could be taught here, where many faiths intermingle and you can visit a Mosque, Cathedral and Synagogue all on the same day.

Granada

Granada was absolutely wonderful, with the exception of a gypsy, who I am convinced put a hex on me. The Alhambra is like nothing I've ever seen, tea houses are on every corner, and the snow capped Sierra Nevadas are a short bus ride away.

Sierra Nevada

A cold, rainy, foggy day seemed perfect for hiking in the Sierra Nevadas. (!) At about 10,000 feet, visibility was near 0. However, new friends, snowball fights and SkiBob's made this day one of my favorites in Spain!

Sevilla

The gypsy hex was in full force when we arrived in Sevilla. A dust storm that blew all the pollen from the trees was followed by nearly non-stop rain for days. A rocky start in an hourly hostel drove us to find better accommodations, which yielded new friends, flamenco and paella.

Cadiz

After 4 days of rain, sunshine seemed to be a tall order. But, a quick, early morning bus ride to the south eastern coast of Spain provided just the right amount of sunshine. Cadiz is a beautiful fishing village with beautiful beaches, an incredible covered market and more snails than I've ever seen!

Barcelona

I truly love Barcelona. It was my favorite part of Spain. It is very different than Southern Spain, and has something to offer everyone. The art and architecture is intriguing, the food unsurpassed, and La Rambla provides surprises at every turn (especially when you return at night!).

Montserrat

A quick train ride from Barcelona, Montserrat (which means Serrated Mountain) is the perfect escape from the high energy of the city. The oddly shaped rock pillars are constantly shaped and polished by the weather. It is quiet and inspirational - and, as was the case for all my hiking days in Spain, cold and rainy. Nonetheless, the universe took control of my exploration and delivered a magical day I will not soon forget.

Copan Ruinas, Honduras

After leaving Utila, I traveled by plane to San Pedro Sula and then by bus to Copan Ruinas. The Mayan ruins here are said to rival those in Chichen Itza and Tikal. Not having seen those, I can't judge, but these were impressive! It was a great way to spend my last days in Central America.

Utila, Honduras

This beautiful island off the coast of Honduras is where I spent New Years and 3 additional days diving. The weather was warm and sunny the first 2 days, but turned for the worse on my diving days. It turned out well...life underwater was much calmer than life above!

Livingston, Guatemala

It only took two weeks, but I finally found the Coco Locos, a local drink made by mixing coconut milk with 5 different kinds of rum. The best part is that it is served in the coconut. Add tapado (more on that later) and the unique Garifuna culture complete with punta dancing and Livingston is a place I'll never forget!

Rio Dulce, Guatemala

I left Antigua for the jungle paradise of Rio Dulce on Lago Isobel near the Caribbean. It was a long road trip out here, made worse by road construction, but well worth all the effort.

Antigua, Guatemala

My visit to Antigua ended up better than expected. I enrolled in Spanish lessons and was able to stay with a family in town. I was totally immersed in the culture, and refined my language skills as well.

San Pedro La Lagunas

San Pedro is located on Lake Atitlan, one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited. I arrived by boat from Panajachel and was treated to beautiful views of three volcanoes. Many people come here to visit for a short time and then never leave. In my 5 days here, I came to understand why.

Chichicastenango, Guatemala

I arrived in Chichi during the Fiesta de Santo Tomas. It was an assault to my senses. Everywhere I turned I saw something unexpected, bombs fired 24 hours a day in celebration, street vendors prepared some of the most amazing food I've ever tasted, chicken buses belched black smoke and battling bands made it impossible not to dance.
