This is our favorite piece of the show. The word shown here is "museros", a word SK made up, a mix of "muse" and "eros", with a hint of "mujera". --SK often paints over old works. This one was painted over a painting of two birds SK had given his wife. They got into a fight and he threw paint over the painting. When they made up he painted this beautiful vision over the destroyed work. Note: the last three art shows at the D Note have featured women playing musical instruments.
This painting was also painted over another painting. SK said he only spent $10 on this whole show! There is a really cool story behind this painting too. The hanging orbs above it were put there this halloween by Diandra, left over from when she turned the D Note a giant jack-o-lantern. SK liked them there and wanted to leave them up. He put this piece up there and afterward he noticed that the orbs hanging in the painting were the same spray paint color as the pumpkin seeds! Awesome serendipity. Also, if you look closely you can see SK's credit card taped to the middle pumpkin seed. I found it on the floor and taped it to seed for him to find at the show the next day. He got me back REAL good for that one, but I'll let him tell you that story next time you see him. Also, dig the pattern on scarf!
To make of what you will.
This one is called, "poem". Reminds me of Spirited Away, giant blimpy unicorn skeleton thingies rolling around the country side singing poetry.
Check out how it looks as if the script continues onto the back of the painting. It doesn't. Also check out they eyes on the character. SK paying homage to his heritage.
This is a silk screen SK designed (more heritage) laid on top an elongated version of his name, for a unique unified effect.
I pointed out to SK that whereas some artists like to darkify Disney, he tends to Disneyfy the dark. The kids depicted here are SK's kids. Check out the guardians. Beautiful.
Another example of interplay between dark and light. Looks fun at first, then scary, then you look again and something more true comes to light. I talked to SK about this piece and was surprised to find out he's a church goer. I love the god's eye theme in this piece.
Speaks for itself.
SK said he thought about doing the whole alphabet for this show, but ran out of time. However, for us he at least did the D. A very cool take on the broncos logo, invoking the deadly stallion up at DIA that fell on and killed it's sculpter, Luis Jimenez.
This is the first piece in this show to sell.
Check out the style. SK has a beautiful imagination.
SK's given name is Markham Maes. Maes backwards is Seam. The "seam" is split here, between frames. I like that you can see "Sea" on the first and "am" on the second." SK is great with the word play.
As I was taking these photos a train went by. I went out to try to get some action shots and got this beaut, a fitting tribute to Letters and Ladies. I'm not sure what it says, but it looks like eye2eye, which fits nicely with union across the top.
