Southwest Montana Science Partnership (SMSP) - Water Quality Assessment at the Calliope Mine

Teachers in the Southwest Montana Science Partnership training program measure water quality at the Calliope Mine in the Upper Clark Fork Basin, and practice developing water monitoring sites in their own schoolyards. The SMSP project is funded by a ESEA, Title II Part B Mathematics and Science Partnership Grant through the Montana Office of Public Instruction.

The Berkeley Pit

The Berkeley Pit in Butte, Montana. The former open-pit mine was abandoned in 1980. When the underground pumps that had dewatered the Pit and the connected underground mine tunnels beneath the Butte Hill were shut off in 1982, the Pit began to fill with surface and ground water. The acidic water is contaminated with high concentrations of heavy metals and toxins such as arsenic. Butte High School Environmental Biology Students on a Field Trip to Silver Bow Creek/Warms Springs

Students from teacher Bill Callaghan's Environmental Biology class take a field trip to Silver Bow Creek near the Warm Springs Ponds as part of World Water Monitoring Day 2008. Students monitored Silver Bow Creek where it discharges from the Warm Springs Ponds treatment system and wildlife management area, as well as the Mill Creek-Willow Creek Bypass Channel, which was created to prevent those two creeks from receiving additional mining-related contamination from the heavily impacted Silver Bow Creek. With much restoration work already completed and more underway, all of these water bodies are looking much healthier than in the past.

Students track radio-collared big horn sheep in the Highlands Range south of Butte as part of a joint CFWEP-FWP program to provide education and collect data about the area's sheep population, which was decimated in years past by illness. Additional sheep were transplanted to the area to bolster the herd.

East Middle School Field Trip to Silver Bow Creek at Miles Crossing

Students from East Middle School visit the Miles Crossing site on Silver Bow Creek. The area has since been restored, but in 2007 the environmental damages of 100 years of accumulated mine tailings wastes were very evident. Students measured water quality, looked at stream bugs, measured streamflow, and walked the site for a general vegetation evaluation.

Trout-in-the-Classroom Program Fish Dissection in Bonner

Students from Bonner School dissect trout as part of the Trout-in-the-Classroom (TIC) program. TIC is sponsored by Trout Unlimited, and places trout tanks with trout eggs in classrooms, giving students and teachers a chance to explore the lifecycle of Montana's staple fish, and to use the tanks as a gateway to other subjects, from biology to ecology to social studies.
