Knight from the so called Charlemagne set, thought by some to be Italian 11th c
A floor mosaic in Piacenza San Savino. c 12c.
A chess set design from The Encyclopedia of Chess. edited by Harry Golombek. Gareth Williams also found a very similar design sheet in the V+A.
Two Ivory pieces I made up to explore the design mechanics. Note the grooves on the body of the king, this would have been made on a 'rose engine' lath in the 17/18c if the set design had ever been realised.
A copy of the design in the V+A 18c Note that this version of the set has plain barels and would have been made on a simple lathe.
