#826. Note this set has at least a knight missing, check the condition report. However the carving quality is of the best. A good example of type and a good choice for a collector who cannot afford a complete set or who knows a good carver in Erbach in Germany. So pehaps G.C. does know a good carver because he bought it! £5,500! (937)
#826 am I seeing a Bishop and 2 pawns missing on this side also? Check the condition report carefully before bidding.
#794, I think this is early 19c at the latest. £350, (923) Got a bargain there mate.

#806, looks good and has tray, I didn't see any damages. Check the condition report. £1,600, (928)
I bought this, £80, I couldn't make 40 ivory counters for £400 so I figured it was a good buy and also a signed box. PS. I can fix the damaged slide.
#804, I liked this, I think it's Italian, and the carving reminded me of the Green and white 'Rose water set in Cholet 1 that J.C. got. I have been told by several dealers that it's by a carver/turner called Richard Griffiths, who was working in the 1970s. I am not convinced, and would like to examine the threads and compare them with the set in Cholet 1. £3,800. (932)
#408

#800, £900, (932)

#730, £190, (3007)
#727, £200, (77)
#724, £400, (84), M.M. opined that there were four kings in this set. He is wrong I've seen this type before and anyway the k+q have diferent stem decoration.
#728, £600. (933)
This didn't sell in C1, I think. #752, £1,200.
#747, £1900, (3007) Made on the white side from Walrus ivory, note the 'marbleing, which is diagnostic of this type of marine ivory.
#735, £1,400, (3010)

These kind of sets are on sale new in the Chess and Bridge centre in Baker St.
#820
See Baker St. reference.
#796
#823, Good , some bases replaced.
#823
#811, This is a set of French Spillikins, and it says so on the box, how many clues do you need. PS> the dolphin is from a French game called Lotto Dauphin
#822
#808 Take no notice of the catalogue, this is 18c English.(I think anyway)
fingers down throat time.
#611, I didn't think the wkn was 'associated', But check to be sure this is a 'club size' Jaques (4 3/8") note, M.W. says there are associated pieces. all knights and rooks have crowns, and felts don't match.
king, #611. Note this set is not part of the 'Cholet' collection. I note the 'L' of London is not in line, However I think this is because Jaques may only have had one curved set of stamps which were designed to suit the curve of the smaller circumference of the 3 1/2" sets.
See the deep carving.
This board goes with the set in the last few pictures.
these objects come up in Alfies Davies St. fairly frequently at around £100
#728
Hmm. OK to £300-£400
Oops, pants problem!
These are plastic, what a shame. Or are they ? nooo they couldn't be real could they?
If you want a very ordinary old English bone set that was once owned by a 'famous collector' then now is your chance.
I think these are modern.
The day of the sale,
A few extra pictures folow.
The Zetland where we congregate for lunch.
Inside very nice.
This could have been yours.
The sale room, with Martin Jones on the right.
A very competant auctioneer.
The lovely Pippa, manning, (womaning?) the phones, an important part of the sale.
Only a sprinkling of dealers and collectors for this sale. However the internet and phones were all strong.
