Showing the very handsome knights of #86. No one has thought of a sensible descriptive codex for identifying the differing styles of carving on the Jaques Stauntons. Calling them after famous chess players is no help as it adds nothing to our knowledge of the genre.
Showing the 'straight' stamp, very early sets, (with J.Jaques stamps) were curved at this stage, (1849), as the only metal stamp was the one used on the (upper side) foot rim of the wood sets.

145, £5,760 It was suggested to me by a well known chess researcher that this set was in ivory and by Bertram Jones A similar set has been copied in metal in the last few years, new casting techniques make this possible.
149, £1020, Nice early set
150, 1 white rook, has no 'brickwork' marks to body. Left most wp has a moustache. However still made £8,400. Rare and desirable. note the rooks on the Pequia side are correct due to a void inside which means they will not make to the size of the mutton bone white side. occasionally found with same size rooks where the nuts have been specially selected by the turner perhaps.
151, £9,000. What's to say, rare, early, expensive, delightful.
153, £264.
154, £420, I'm a bit suprised, as these are avaliable from the Indian maker. I suppose this set is meant to be acopy of the Munich set in Schakpartie durch Zeiten und Welten, (the Hamburgh chess club catalogue page 222 for the real thing.)
