Marian Anderson Awards - Honoring Bill Cosby
On Tues April 6, native Philadelphian, Bill Cosby, received the Marian Anderson Award at a big shindig at the Kimmel Center. Because of Cosby's strong ties to Central, the Central High Alumni had their own dinner in the 2nd floor restaurant there. The Cos, in good spirits and looking relaxed in a gray Central High t-shirt and tuxedo pants, took some time out from the $500 a plate benefit dinner on the lower level to come up and spend some time with us at the Central High dinner.
The award show in the main auditorium that ensued, featured the Philadelphia Orchestra, opera singer Denyce Graves, jazz singer Lizz Wright, Boyz 2 Men, David Brenner, a classic old-time jazz group, and the Cos himself. Beautifully preserved Broadway dinosaur, Chita Rivera, was the mistress of ceremonies.
The Philadelphia Orchestra played the Central High School Song as Cosby ascended the stage to receive the award.
One of the guest conductors was James DePriest, another Central High grad. DePriest
