On the way to Slieve League and Killybegs
Slieve League is supposed to be the highest cliffs in Europe but we're not there yet.
Slieve League--one part. That's a sandy beach down there. Beautiful and rustic we were at a dead end but not at the highest point yet.
Slieve League--the protected cove past this tiny tiny village.
Slieve League and its local denizens. Note the hummocky ground.
Slieve League--all the sheep had green or red daubed butts. I presume there were marked as to when they should be sheared.
Slieve League--looking the other way along the beach.
Slieve League--thistles
Slieve League (on the way to) This is tweed country.
Slieve League--on the way.
Bunglass Cliffs--we're here, the highest cliffs in Europe but we're standing on them.
Bunglass Cliffs--the road up was a bit scary. Not very wide but we never ran into anyone coming in the other direction...thankfully.
Bunglass Cliffs
Bunglass Cliffs--to the west; the sheep don't mind the cliffs at all.
After Slieve League we travelled south to near Sligo. This was the Dunes B&B, part of a tavern and probably the least lovely of all our places.
Carrowmore--Most passage graves and neolithic sties. Queen Maeve's tomb was at Knocknarea but it was a 45 minute hike and it was raining a lot.
Carrowmore--this passage grave, called Listoghil, had no corbelled roof like Newgrange, but a dolmen cenotaph at the middle.
Carrowmore--the dolmen tomb of Listoghil.
Carromore--there are many passage graves in this area dating to that of Newgrange or even older.
Carrowmore--there are over 30 sites in this area.
Carrowmore--Listoghil is in the background. There is debate that some of these might be of different cultures.
Carrowmore neolithic tombs
Carrowmore--one of the many tombs, on both sides of the road. Undistrubed in some case for 5000 years.
Carrowmore--past and present together, farmhouses and neolithic graves.
Carrowmore--we probably missed some of the graves as you had to climb through fences.
Carrowmore--it was pouring through this, though it looks nicer in the photos.
Carrowmore--one of the many cairns.
Carrowmore--a close up of the cairn
Carrowmore--nothing but stones but at one point many of these held ashes and ornaments.
Carrowmore
Carrowmore--one of the better cairns, which took judiciously moving around a lot of mud.
Carrowmore--the tomb close up within the ring of stones.
Carrowmore--the tomb with flash to show the interior.
