Wadi Rum - Nov 2007

"Vast, echoing and godlike" is how T.E. Lawrence described this valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southwest Jordan. It is the largest wadi in Jordan. The name Rum most likely comes from an Aramaic root meaning 'high' or 'elevated'. To reflect its Arabic pronunciation properly, archaeologists transcribe the name Wadi Ramm. Inhabited by many human cultures since prehistoric times, the area offers many markings to study in the form of rock paintings, graffiti, and temples. As of 2007, several Bedouin tribes inhabit the area.

Day 08 - Lot's Cave, King's Highway & Dead Sea

Depart Aqaba heading north to visit Lot’s Cave. Drive to Lot’s Cave via beautiful Wadi Feifeh Road from near Tafileh, along the King’s Highway.

Day 05 - Petra

Petra’s exquisite ruins open doorways in time to the biblical land of Moab and the nearby Valley of Moses. The Plains of Moab were so named because this area once fell under the control of King Eglon of Moab in the Iron Age (Judges 3:12-14).

Day 04 - Mukawir & Kerak

First we visited Mukawir, where Salome danced the dance of Seven Veils and where John the Baptist was imprisoned and beheaded. Then onto Kerak, a Masterpiece of Crusader Architecture - the most impressive remains of Crusader forts and outposts.

Hill of the Citadel (Jabal al-Qal'a), Amman, Jordan

Citadel Hill is a historic area near the center of downtown Amman, Jordan. Known in Arabic as Jabal al-Qal'a, the L-shaped hill is one of the seven jabals that originally made up Amman. It has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, making it among the world's oldest continuously inhabited places. A church atop the hill was built in the A.D. 300s by the Byzantines.

Day 01 - Arrive in Amman

Arrived at Jordan’s Queen Alia International Airport where we were met by a representative of the Jordan Tourism Board whom guided us to our, our dinner at hotel, and then advised an early evening and a good night’s sleep.
