Subaru viscous center differential
After I fried the centre diff (two different sized rear tires), I thought I'd take it apart to see how it works.
A couple of notes - the smell is foul! and the oil has turned to very sticky black goo.
The plates engage alternately with the splines on the inner shaft and the splines on the main body of the diff. The thin pieces of wire are slightly thicker than the smaller plate, and look as if they act as a spacer to keep the plates separate.
