Day One. On the north side of Interstate 10 a few miles west of Palm Springs is this giant iron elephant. I have no idea why its there. But it's cool. I like it.
This is part of the rugged mountain views of southeastern California. This is somewhere on Hwy 62.
Sunrise, eastern Arizona, just outside Safford on US 70.
Same spot, a few minutes later.
Just a lonely stretch of Arizona highway, watched over by mesas in the distance.
The tombstone of the gunfighter, er, shootist, of whom I am named. This is located in a one person cemetary, at the Museum of the West in Pecos, Texas.
The first tombstone of Clay Allison.
The courthouse of the 'hanging judge' Roy Bean. Pecos, Texas.
This is a crappy shot, and it means nothing to anyone but my family, but this is the sign of the shop owned and operated by my uncle in Granbury, Texas.
The courthouse in the center of the downtown square, Granbury, Texas.
Part of the old square in Granbury.
Can you guess what this building was for?
Mmmm, yummy.
General Granbury.
This is my oldest cousin, Judy.
And this is her youngest child, Louann.
Uncle Tommy and Aunt June. June is my dad's oldest sister.
My dad's parents.
My grandfather was raised in this cabin.
My cousin Brenda and her husband Dwayne.
Cousin Bill.
And cousin Mark, and his wife Tina.
Aunt Dena (my dad's second older sister) and Uncle Eugene.
In the town of Acton, Texas, is a cemetary. In that cemetary is a State Park. Inside that state park is this statue. This statue is the memorial of Elizabeth Crockett. She is shown looking to the west, on eternal watch for the return of her husband, Davy.
The first snow I encountered on my trip. This is somewhere just west of the Virginia/West Virginia state line on I-64.
In the tiny little town of Santa Claus, Indiana, is this statue of jolly old St. Nick. Maybe it's just me, but does this look Santa's evil nazi twin brother to you?
I have often wondered why there are always First National this and First National that, but you never see the Second National Bank of anything. Well, that's all taken care of now. So isn't this technically the 1 and 2/3 Bank?
My car covered in salt residue.
Near the town of Santa Claus, Indiana is a national park dedicated to the childhood of Abraham Lincoln. This is a bronze replica of the sill timbers and fireplace of one of Lincolns childhood homes. Which means that this is a statue of a foundation of a log cabin.
My cousin Tony Ray and his fiancee.
One of the hot rods of the local southern Indiana Amish community.
Uncle Ray (dad's little brother) and Aunt Vickie.
The St. Louis Arch.
Interstate 90 crossing the frozen Missouri River.
The town of Chamberlain, South Dakota, on the banks of the Missouri.
I thought this was an interesting concept. A pay phone you can use from your car.....
.... but I am pretty sure you are supposed to put the phone back before you leave. Now, how many of you old people are having drive-in movie flashbacks?
Just your typical dinosaur on the side of the freeway.
First view of Mt. Rushmore coming from the north.
Mt. Rushmore.
Same shot zoomed in.
A view of the carving down the hall of flags.
Just down the road from Mt. Rushmore, is the practically unknown, privately funded carving of Crazy Horse. The sculptor has been working on this since the 50's. He died in 1982 and his family is continuing the work. It doesnt really look big, but the entire carving of Rushmore would fit into the cleared space of rock behind Crazy Horse's head.
This is the 1/34 scale model used for the mountain carving.
The scale model with the mountain in the background. Unfortunately the best shot for this photo needs to be taken from inside the shed. It was about 30 degrees this day and the glass roll up door was closed. So you see the crossbeams of the window panes.
This is the Best Western motel in Billings, Montana. Can you see the wooden bears looking in the windows?
A close up of the bear. I keep imagining some poor traveler checking in late at night after a long day of sightseeing, waking up the next morning and looking out the window into the rising sun. And seeing a bear staring you in the face.
The ice filled Yellowstone River near Reed Point, Montana.
Same shot looking east. Zoomed out.
My poor California car, freaking out. This is my parents driveway in Spokane, Washington.
The unincarcerated members of the Lloyd family. Left to right, Jimmy, Wilma, Clay, Kathy.
Gene and Dee Foster, Mom, me, Dad, and Kathy.
A photo of a photo. My nephew Derek and his girlfriend.
Another photo of a photo. Same couple.
You'll never ever, ever, guess what this is. Yeah, its them again. And yeah, its a photo of a photo. And just to make it a really lousy shot, I left the glass on the frame.
